I really like the 308 and have been looking at getting one, don't do nearly enough miles to consider a diesel so this is my only option. Is it definitely improved on later versions as i would be looking at ones 2-3 years old.
Obviously if I was to buy one it should have full service history, and try to inspect the belt for signs of crumbling, but then how often should the cambelt be changed?
What is the opinion on this engine? is it best avoided or can you control this issue and run one reliably?

Thanks

Considering the 1.2 Puretech also likes to coke up the inlet valves requiring cleaning - I now cannot recommend this engine.

34k miles & just 4 & half years old with full Peugeot main dealer service history plus Peugeot extended warranty on mine & the inlet valves coked up.

Peugeot warranty flatly refused to pay as its not technically a failure - after pressure from myself & the Peugeot main dealer, Peugeot UK finally agreed to pay 100% towards the repair.

After 22+ years & 5 Peugeots, I won't ever buy another PSA product.

Why blame Peugeot? fouling of the intake valves is common amongst all GDI engines moreso if the service intervals are too long as is the case nowdays change oil before recommended mileage will help keep PCV and Valve fouling lower it can't be eliminated due to design, some cars have port & direct injection which reduces the problem but seems more like a workaround.

Maybe PSA will do something about the valve fouling issue once it updates the Puretech 1.2 to timing chain - one way of curing the timing belt issues.

Friend of mine with a 7 year old Mazda had problems, turned out to be the inlets coked up. Mazda paid for everything, including a new MAF and EGR valve.
Compare that to Peugeot.

I'll certainly be using my Toyota employee discount next time I purchase a vehicle - PSA won't get another sale out of me.

It's a problem with all direct injection engines, diesels included. Short trips are the worst though.
EGR cleaner can sometimes help.
