How bad was the oil, a slight amount of oil is normal due to breather system. If load of oil what is the tailpipe like any oil dripping?

Is there any noise like chuffing from round the injectors it could be they have been removed to fault find and not refitted correctly which could be compression leak.

Can you feel compression on any cylinders if you turn the engine over by hand

Oil sound about normal. So no runaway and melted engine parts based on that amount and clean tailpipe.

Any luck with live data readings as you need cam/crank sync, 250+ Bar fuel pressure and normally around 120 RPM to start.

Even if compression is a bit low it should show signs of firing.

Worst case for live data if you have a android phone get fap lite and a cheap Bluetooth obd2 elm327 dongle and that should give you basic live data

Waiting for my new maxipro 808 scanner to arrive and I'm going to try a compression test and it showed no signs of trying to start ive done alot of engines to know something isn't right was hoping belt was snapped or crank so I'd no but its starting to baffle me as your right if 1 piston valve headgasket gone it would still start and sound rough new engines are getting harder to diagnose

Any improvement on the 0psi with a squirt of oil in the cylinder and any obvious leaks around injector.

How new did the belt look when you checked it. Could the previous owner have fitted a new belt after it snapped and could not get it run due to bent valve or damaged lifter and therefore just sold it on.

I cannot remember what engine it was, but I can recall someone with a non starter after belt issue and the woodruff key on one of the cam pulleys had sheared when the belt/chain failed and the cam turned in the pulley so it was not timing up correctly

Belt looks not new but ok and cams are turning how can 2 cylinders b down opposite rules out head gasket 1 and 3 cylinder down if one was down id say dropped valve but 2 not next to each other ? Timing can't b out or all would b out 2 and 4 are both 170 psi unless that is also low

I would expect around 300. Are the valves actually actuating (lifters drained down etc) as if the valves are not opening or only very little then that might explain the low compression.

Could it have been hydrauliced driving through floods or similar and rods are bent and sold on when they could not get it running. Can you get a bore scope in to have a look inside without stripping

well took rocker off and 6 of the 8 exhaust followers are snapped but the valves and springs and collets are all fine what has caused this and do u think ive dodged the bullet as valves seem ok from top

Depends on how they were broken. If they had fitted a new belt wrong there is a good chance of little or no damage if the belt let go when driving it's more chance of damage.

Unless one of the valves was jammed by the rocker or similar the 0psi cylinder would be the one that concerned me. If you have access to a compressor you could try pressure testing cylinders and see if the valves blow by

If you can get access to tensioner you maybe able slacken the belt enough to pull it off the cam pulley

The big question has to be what caused them to break if the belt was intact and not a new/replacement one.

God nos but I've set timing at cam and its 10 teeth of from flywheel there are 6 holes in the flywheel all line up with the hole but 5 close together or holes and the other is at other side of flywheel is shampered and deeper that must b timing hole I hope gonna put new belt and 16 lifters on and pray for the best the cylinder with 0 psi had all 4 lifters broken but valves and springs all look brand new no scratches even strange

There is only a single hole in flywheel which will lock it in position via hole behind starter motor in the web of the block. Then lock cam before fitting the carrier
