THP timing chain question

Hi all. I've had my 207 thp150 for about a year now. Its touching 50 000 miles and as far as I know its still on its original timing chain. I understand they can stretch over time and eventually snap. My 207 is displaying "depollution system faulty".
I know that doesn't necessarily mean the timing chains on its way out but on top of that it sounds like a diesel on cold mornings until its heated up.
So how much should I expect to pay to get a newer chain and tensioner under the hood?

Tons. The timing chain is 'meant' to last the life of the engine so it's not exactly designed with ease of replacement in mind.

The THP engine is very noisy at idle. I wouldn't worry about any noise.

Get a proper diagnostic check done so you know what's wrong with it. "Depollution System Faulty" could be anything from a broken turbocharger to issues with the engine coolant sensor. Trying to diagnose it without a proper OBD scanner (prefrably a Peugeot Planet) is like trying to tell what your IQ is by sticking your thumb up your ass.

I've got an arnold clark fiat garage doing my mot and service due this month so i'm hoping it does come back ok. I was a member of "207oc" before they closed down and they seemed to think the THP engines were flawed. The DS3, mini cooper s and the 207 Gt & gti to mention a few. Are they really as faulty as people have made out? Would hate to have to shell out for a new engine..

Yep the early Prince engine is a pile of excrement it makes the 1.6 hdi look reliable.

Poor oil control, duff timing chain tensioners & VVT controller cause the major wear on chain, timing issues and chain failure

Shame.. Its a pretty good car to drive. Wanting mine to last. If it passes its mot at the end of the month I might see if I can have a word with my local Peugeot dealership and see if they can give me a quote. Only thing wrong with the driving experience is if I try to use a lot of gas in 5th gear i'll get no power for a second or two and then a backfire and everything kicks in again. Thats very rare however..

If the symptoms have only just developed there is a chance that it could just be the hydraulic tensioner starting to fail and if changed ASAP you may be OK

I wouldn't say they're unreliable. Only anecdotal evidence to back that up of course. I haven't heard of any of them failing catastrophically. I've been beating my 55k mi+ THP 150 to within an inch of its life nearly daily for about 4 years now (bought it used) and have not had any engine troubles at all. Oil consumption is pretty high though. But that may be due to the leaks from the failing seals on the turbo etc.

I occasionally get a "Turbocharger pressure too low" code (especially after long bouts of wide open throttle on open roads) but I think that may be due to the 'chip tuning' I had done on it which raised the boost pressure slightly (in hindsight this probably wasn't such a good idea).

It still boosts fine and drives well.

I think you'll find the biggest issue is finding competent people to work on it when it does go pear shaped. It's not your run of the mill 1.6 generic econobox engine.

I'm in Edinburgh.
Just had my cars mot done at sighthill fiat. Said the timing chain shouldn't need replacing. It's been a bit of a nightmare. The cars running like a pig. If I use more than half acceleration it judders like it's going to stall. Arnold Clark charge ÂŁ70 per hour diagnostics. All they've really told me is it have 4 warning lights showing.

Nice of them to tell u what the faults are!

Could be a few things tbh, depends mileage of car, type driving, fuel used, service history etc etc etc.

Hate how dealers charge that much for diagnostics when it only takes 5 mins max to do a global test using Peugeot Planet even on a slow laptop lol

Just glad my cars running smoother, through its mot and I've now got protected ncb (just incase)
Spoke to arnold clark about my timing chain. They wouldn't even give me a quote. There's "no way" it should need changing. Tbh the cars been a bit of a nightmare. The thp is a love hate thing with me. Its great to drive when it works. If I ever get the "risk of ice" beep then my heart misses a beat..
I'm thinking of taking my car to "ecosse peugeot" in Linlithgow.. I've seen them recommended on an old forum (207oc). The staff are ex Peugeot technicians so they'd hopefully be able to help.
I must be mad to want another Peugeot after all this. Saying that i'd like a 208 Gti. :eek:

Yeh Ecosse are superb, anything major in the last I have always used them as local dealer decided to stop working on modified vehicles lol

They did by my engine build a couple years back.

But do most of own work on them now as mate has a ramp up at Crail.

Know what you mean about the "risk of ice" warning, my stomach just drops lol

Think am actually gonna switch the temp thing off using my diagnostics as found how to do it recently.

What's the mileage and year of reg of the car??

Diagnostic check would point us in the rite direction of the faults and also maybe another check on the fuel trims that can also help us see what the issue is, but Peugeot don't go on fuel trims but it's a handy way to look if timing or fuel pump is going or gone.

They didn't. They said it was rectified with the manifold sensor. Two days later "beep". I'm not sending any more money their way. Only reason I used them is so that I didn't void my warranty. Which surprise, surprise doesn't cover sensors.
I'll be getting intouch with ecosse probably at the end of the month. Was going to post to see if anyone had used them before but going by your recommendation Ecosse will be the right place to go.
Do you know what their rates are?

Hi peugeot tech here The tensioner is common and causes the chain to stretch the correct way to check is first put your finger on the head of the tensioner if it has a hole in it that means that has the mod one fitted if not just peace of mind change the kit and tensioner and at the same time take both of the solinoid valves out and clean the swarf build up off, the full job should take no more than 3 hours to do with correct tools
