Dash lights come on by themselves

I have a 2014 308 1.6 HDi 115 Active. This started happening 2 nights ago. I was just about to go to bed when I noticed lights on in the car. Went out to check and from what I could make out all the dash lights were on, all the warning lights, mileometer were all --- as was trip miles, speedo and rev counter illumination, everything on. Would stay on for about 1 minute then go off for a minute and just continue like that.

Remote on the key fob didn't work at this point, had to open the door manually, opening the door triggered the alarm but at this point remote worked. I could also start the car and today I went out for a 40 minute drive and everything was fine. Parked up, left it about an hour went out to check and dash lights were all lit up again.

I have tested by locking the car and just leaving it unlocked, fault occurs either way. I have also checked the battery and it is fully charged.

I have never seen a fault like this, the onboard fault thing says there are no faults.

I have searched and searched but can't find anyone with a similar problem and there is nothing even close to this in the manual.

Update.
After I took the key out of the ignition and shut the door I stayed to check how long it was that the dash lights came on, which I didn't actually find out because...….
After 1 minute and 5 seconds, the left indicator dash light, mileometer and trip all flash up for a second then the wipers and headlights come on, they stay on for about 45 seconds, go off and then some time after that all the dash lights will come on and go off and continue like that until I either disconnect the battery or unlock the door manually with the key, when I actually open the door the alarm goes off at this point the remote starts working again. I can then start the car and everything is ok. I park the car, lock or leave the car unlocked and it will repeat the whole process again.

I've done the whole BSI reboot procedure but just to be clear this problem started before I disconnected the battery. I simply can't leave the battery connected now as it will just keep doing this whole dash lights on and off permanently and I really don't like leaving it overnight doing that.

If the battery was holding a charge would it still cause any kind of problem like this as I am at my wits end. I live in the middle of nowhere and the nearest dealer is probably about a 80 mile round trip.

I did this one.

1 Close all doors
2 Remove ignition key if left in ignition
3 Reconnect battery. DO NOT open any doors
4 Wait 10 seconds
5 Switch on headlights through the drivers window (you will hear a "bong") (note: Snap-on says Side-lights)
6 Switch on ignition then start the vehicle and check system functions

Although I didn't hear a bong on switching headlights on so I have tried it with side lights as well. Not sure how loud the bong is supposed to be but I am partially deaf.

From what you describe, there is no pattern to the symptoms. From experience, whenever there is no pattern it tends to be more of an interconnection problem on the loom. A bad main or supplementary earth can be the culprit but it can also be water ingress on a multi-plug. A bit of water on a 15 pin socket can do some very strange things. Try to stay clear of the Ecu until you,ve opened a few plugs and cleaned/dried them out. You may get some data from a Planet test but it sounds like they will be coming to you and not the other way round.

That's basically the second part (reconnection) and is just about the same as far as I can see. Providing, when you disconnected the battery, you didn't immediately remove the battery terminal after switching off the ignition it would essentially be the same.

I'd maybe try the full process a couple more times but after that I'm a bit at a loss. I might follow Pluggit's train of thought and take some of the connectors off and on the BSI (and anywhere else) while the battery is disconnected in case there's a bad connection. If you have some contact cleaner (Servisol, etc) spray that on to the pins. Ditto with any earthing points you can find.

if the car has no issues when you are driving it and the problems only begin after you stop and lock the car then I would be tempted to put jump leads from another car on the battery connections and then turn your engine off and lock the car as usual, if the problem has gone then its the battery or connections to the battery which includes the positive wire junction box near the + battery terminal, and the earth - connection points.

if the problem is still there when you have the jump leads connected then at least the battery has been eliminated.

Have you added anything electrical new to the car recently, poorly fitted dashcam hardwire kits etc can sometimes cause the BSI not to fully go to sleep

No, I've recently had shoulder surgery so can't drive and the car hadn't been moved in about a week before I discovered the problem.

Update. I didn't lock the car last night, it did the usual thing, wipers and headlights came on for 45 seconds then dash lit up like a Christmas tree flashing on and off every couple of minutes. The wipers will usually stop midway through a wipe. Now when I opened the drivers door the wipers finish the wipe and park in their normal position. At this point I didn't put the key in the ignition, closed the door but still unlocked and then the wipers and headlights come on as usual for 45 seconds and then eventually the dash lights. I have ordered a new battery to rule the battery out.

Out of curiosity how do you remove the battery with 1 and 1/2 arms? I haven't had a close look but cannot see how it is secured in. Do I need to remove any panels to gain access?
