Clutch/Gearbox rattle

Hi all, Friend has a 207 1.4 16v petrol 2007, I noticed he has a rattle when idling but it goes away when you press the clutch, My guess is the release bearing is knackered?

But there is also a noise when he’s driving is gear 1, 2, 3, Like a rattle sort of noise and increases with speed, 4th & 5th gear are fine and you don’t hear any noise,

I told him to try these two tests.

drive at 30mph then press the clutch to see if the noise disappeared, which it did,

I then told him to do the same but rev the car while the clutch was pressed at 30mph, same again the noise disappeared and the engine revved great and sounded as it should, But soon as the clutch petal was released the noise came back,

So theres definitely a problem with the transmission and not the engine,

I’m not a expert with cars just a DIYer, but are the 2 tests I told him to do a classic sign of a bad release bearing or something more serious with the gearbox

Release bearing, Pilot bearing, Input shaft bearing, Its one, two or all of them and when they start to play up its hard to determine exactly which despite what the internet says so as you have to part the gearbox from the block you may as well cut your losses, change them all and swap the clutch too. many have opened it up, replaced a release bearing and put it all back to be sadly surprised the noise is still there. And Im one of them. Learn by my mistakes Grasshopper..

Garage said it’s the main input bearing, he said he’s having the box rebuilt with new clutch kit, Thanks for info?

Common fault on 207 gearbox. I had to do input bearing on the daughters old 207cc. I ended up overfilling gearbox oil by 100mm to try and help as the oil level is critical to keep this bearing lubricated.

Good bit of advice there. Mine is just about noticeable at the moment but will probably get the gearbox bearing and clutch swapped out.

Haven’t looked at this yet as I have the dreaded oil leak from just above the alternator area.

Done the obvious things like rocker gasket and cam shaft gaskets - so it either crankshaft seal or head gasket.
