It will be the leak off pipes on the injectors common fault fills up the sockets of the injectors and when it gets really bad can cause smoke in cabin, if your injectors weren’t sealed then you would see the Diesel in the socket bubbling or slowly seeping away.

What's the best way to test for leak off pipes being the issue? the top of the injectors look dry

 

Just a question...did you get the old copper washers out....if you did ..did you clean up the base where the injector seals?

 

Yes I got the old ones out, cleaned up the bases as best as I could using a rag on the end of a screwdriver and scratching away with a screwdriver to get the more stubborn parts off

Hi...engine cover off..if it has one..hold the revs quite high...look for drips

 

You need to thoroughly examine them as if won’t take the sockets long to fill up even with a bit of seepage, but like explained get someone in the car and rev it through 2k revs for 60 secs while you have a ganders, if it was a through you not reinstalling the injectors correctly I would of thought that it would have been hard to start, rough running or at least through a fault they are temperamental buggers.

 

Cheers both, car is running well so hopefully it is just the leak off pipes, I'll enlist some help tomorrow and give it a try, so I'm guessing stare at the top of the injector where the inlet is looking for a drip, or do they leak elsewhere?

 

yes the leak off pipes plug into the top or on older models I think it was in the side of the injector they send unused diesel by the injectors back when you removed the leak off pipes you may have fractured one of the unions they are so fragile I’ve broke loads have a look and hope it’s your issue as it an easy fix.

 

So a quick update, got the car warm then maintained 2k for a minute, no visible leaks from either of the pipes on the injectors, however I started to notice a bit of a leak from the rocker cover, so I've whipped that off and ordered a new rocker cover gasket, should have it today so will update later on if anything changes.
Leak looked like it was filling up the little sockets so maybe this was the issue all along.

 

Rocker cover replaced, Seems like it solved the issue, but now I've got a new problem with small amounts of oil pooling on the rightmost injector (looking at the car), not too sure if the rocker cover seal is bad or I'm thinking it might be the breather pipe for the PCV valve, so I'm going to try replacing the o ring on that, any other suggestions appreciated though!

 

So I haven't updated in a while as I haven't had time to work on the car, but I removed the right most injector today and noticed a small cut in the seat of the injector, is this likely to be the source of problems or should the copper washer prevent it?
I'm also cleaning it again since it looked pretty manky down there.

 

Yes it would as it IS the seal!

 

Its not going to help the copper seal as it gives the compression gases an easy route past you can get a tool to clean the seats properly

 

Just to finish up this thread, I got a seat cutter and replaced the seal again (third time lucky) and it's made a world of difference, everything is lovely and dry now, thanks for everyone's help!
