Morning Everyone

New to Peugeot. OH has just acquired a very attractive 2020 3008 GT Line with the above engine.
21k miles, serviced at 5k and 20k,allegedly

OH is doing big miles and complained of a noise on start up which I have recorded. I'm a bit nervous about it.

Sounds metallic. The recording is not great but you might be able to hear it just as it fires (after starter disengages). It's followed by another sound that might be related. They are each sub-second.

I checked the oil this morning and it looks far from fresh. In fact, it's almost thick. Same garage was responsible for both stamps in the book. No digital history !

I think the oil might not have been changed at all and I am fearful of starvation to critical parts resulting in the startup noise.

Is the noise familiar to anyone out there please ?

I've ordered correct oil spec and filter and will get them on myself ASAP this week. Hopefully it resolves the issue and not too much damage has been done. I change every 10k in any event.

....I could be just worried about nothing but I know sludgy oil when I see it and I have been messed about by too many dealers to trust any of them.

Cheers,
Ken

I would urgently check with a dealer if it's covered by the timing chain (that links the cams) recall as it sounds like it could be the chain tensioner and it can result in chain failure and severe engine damage

I have the same noise very often when the engine is cold, i informed the maintenance department and they always tell me that they didn't find/ hear anything.
I thought it was the starter or an alternator belt but now i also worry about the timing belt. Mine has 70000 km and i got it new in April 2020.
I have the noise recorded but cannot attach here, it says the uploaded file does not have an allowed extension.
Does anyone have such a recall reference number?

Morning
Re: cold. Mine didn't do it yesterday morning in less cold conditions interestingly.
I've registered the problem with a recording at the dealership should it develop into anything more.
Also asked about recall.
I'm changing oil today to Mobil Super 3000 Formula P 0W-20. I don't believe correct oil was used before or even the filter changed.
I'll keep you posted
Cheers

Goodmorning!
I'm also changing oil today and i will let them know about the sound and tell you the results, although i know the answer will be "we don't hear anything, you need to book it for a check up and after check up they will tell me it sounds normal" 😎 The car is great, it's very fast (for its size and engine) and the economy is super, i did a ceramic coating and the car is shining like new, i change oil every 5000km and service is every 10000km so hopefully the car will will last. :)

Oil changed.
Verdict: so far so good. Clean start this morning in cold.
Zero evidence of any previous filter change. No finger marks or anything to suggest it was changed just two short thousand miles ago. Peugeot stamps.
Our previous vehicle had the same issue. The undertray had never been removed and therefore the filter had not been changed in 40k miles. Kwikfit stamps.

I have zero trust in large outfits.

10 minute suction oil change at best. Crap oil.

Bit early to conclude anything but I am very relieved in the knowledge that quality oil is now protecting my engine.

As an aside. I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality underside. The long tray gives great cover and easily comes off. Everything is quite light though which I suppose if part of the equation for great fuel economy. Even the oil filler cap is very light.

Air intake was fiddly to remove. Would be easier in warm weather. The cold plastic was difficult to manipulate but like everything, easier when you know how.

Will keep posted.

but now i also worry about the timing belt
I'm fearing chain tensioner which seems to be a not uncommon problem.
There was recall on some VIN's for DV5 chain/tensioner issue. Apart from that or as part of it, there was an upgrade of the chain from 7mm to 8mm on DV5, but it needs a new head to accommodate.

Yep, that's my understanding too but it points to a weakness imo and I can't help but be nervous.
I came across a recording of identical noise from same model/year that was posted on YouTube 1y ago. Last comment says the guy sold it pronto.
I have it booked in locally for 14th so fingers crossed.
Thanks for info/reply

Hi there! I've been to the garage for an oil change, i informed them about the strange startup noise. The garage was very busy and they told me that i urgently needed front brake pads and booked it for the next morning to replace front brake pads and investigate the noise. The next day the technical manager took me to his office and played the sound multiple times. He insists that it sounds like a starter problem and not the timing chain/ tensioner. He asked me to bring the car there from the day before so that to start-up the engine by himself the next day as it only makes the sound when the engine is cold. It's been like this for the last 3 years so i told him he can check it out in 5000km when it will be there for service 😎 Been there before, i know they won't hear anything again

Update:
It's happening more often. But it has been cold up until yesterday.
It didn't happen yesterday even though the car was laid up for 24 hours.
However, today it is not cold and it happened but only after the car was started (without symptoms) then started again after a very short period of time. Less than 1 minute.
I'm starting to think it's load related. Preheaters / multiple starts etc. Potentially all enough to put enough load on the battery to stress the alternator in some way.
Hopefully the garage can replicate by adding some load somehow.
I'm going to try to start/stop a few times in succession tomorrow and see if I can reproduce on demand.
Could be alternator related. Fingers crossed.

Update:-
I can reproduce the problem. Seems battery load related and therefore potentially alternator or something in that system.
If weather is warm, glowers don't come on and start is quiet. On second successive try after being drained somewhat by previous start, the noise is more likely to happen, and so on.
Could of course be random but I'm hoping I've figured it out.
Going in for inspection tomorrow.

Edit was for added clarity

If it is very cold you can get a diesel knock on start up as the fuel timing is advanced due to the slow burn to aid starting. however it should only last a couple of seconds until there is some heat in the cylinders.

Update
Knobs at the dealership couldn't/wouldn't replicate. They said that repetitive starting isn't how they would test. They also asked me to perhaps send an audio recording next time.
They clearly didn't listen to the recording I sent to them.
Typical .
Thanks Evans Halshsaw, Banbury UK.
USELESS
I'll keep at it myself.
