Rightio folks

I've been playing with my audio system, so far I have changed the stereo to an aftermarket one.

I took the speaker guard off the front door to look at my speakers. I notice they are harmon kardon ones. I also notice that there are some 'prongs' that the speakers fit over........

This is going to make it hard to chose aftermarket speakers isn't it?

Which aftermarket speakers would you go for - and why?

Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeers :D

I know better than anyone else Harmon Kardon speakers are excellent, I have an iMac G4 which is what, 10 years old that came with them!

The reason for a speaker upgrade is that I have blown the speakers (I listen to a lot of heavy drum, bass, dubstep music).

I would get a subwoofer (and with an estate you'd think I have plenty of room), however my estate is a 7 seater for a reason and 50% of the time those 7 seats are occupied.

As I say, I've updated my headunit and now feel the speakers need to be replaced as they have blown and sound awful past volume 15 really.

Hi

Fair does lol I would guess if the 406 has locate pins I would buy if room permits some mdf and make a new mount you will find it hard to get the bass with others brands I have pioneer in a 307 love them but not into real bass music

I also use a powered underseat pioneer sub was about ÂŁ150 goes into the head unit direct

If you wanted you could mount an amp under the other seat as driving bass drivers tends to need more power

Final bit wonder if a breakers would have some kardons use extra dosh for sub or amp you would be surprised how good the small sub is and it's discreet

it really depends how far you want to get into it....
a good look around will tell you how to go about it:

Passive Crossover Networks
the std audio stuff will need low bass blockers -ie chokes to limit the low stuff getting to them (they're simply not big enough to move the air req.d anyway) as you found out- expecting them to do what you wanted 80hz or 100hz cut off, then a slight overlap with the sub to cover any holes in the sound -subs ar really from 80hz down to say 15hz -ish for the thump in the audio ,it takes the load off the front set. you cant hear where the sub is anyway so placement won't matter.
and fit a sub to do all the low bits, lots of ways to do it ,and it really depends how deep your pockets are or how much time you have if you're good with your hands....
the tubes mentioned are available without amps ie not 'active' but you wanted a simple in /out option...and to keep the space when you needed it back .
sadly not cheap options unless you get lucky and watch ebay etc..for a few months or longer
i hope some of this makes sense ,i tried editing it etc as i wrote it....

I run x over at 100 h you will find it very hard finding bass sub 40 h in most tracks and its a very good sub that will go below that in any event

I run in a cinema system a svs sub 39 inch high 16 inch diameter that would not really pull below 30h even with great sound deadening you would just get a lot of rattle
