Planet all day long as generic readers can be very hit n miss

 

You get Peugeot diagnostics clones (Lexia interface, Planet/Diagbox software) on eBay or Aliexpress. Expect to pay £50 or £60. Prices below that are usually older hardware releases, which might be ok on your 206, but probably not on later cars. Look for "full chip" and Issue C. The real McCoy costs an arm and a leg, so everyone uses clones.

Use a Windows 32-bit OS - most people report problems with 64-bit with Diagbox, and Planet only runs on 32-bit. XP SP3 is favourite, but 8=10 work. If your PC OS is 64-bit, install a 32-bit OS as a Virtual System (VM), or buy a cheap old XP laptop.

Do a search on this site - there are tons of information.

I was looking at the OBDLink LX which is a similar price (about £65 on Amazon) but works from a mobile rather than needing a laptop, that and the fact it would work with any car rather than being limited to Peugeot/Citroen is quite appealing - but not if it's not likely to work as well.

 

OK, there is one on eBay at almost £115 from tools4car but over 800 sold and excellent feedback. I actually found their website yesterday when looking for it and they do seem good albeit expensive. This appears to be the same as the ones you can find for considerably less money but I'm hoping to keep the car for 10 years and over that period of time £50 saving for a cheaper one is insignificant so unless somebody has a better suggestion I'm going to order it when I get home from work this evening

 

I've had the Planet/diagbox interface for some time now, revision C. Worked well with our 206 and my earlier 307. Recently ugraded to later software so I could use it on my 308 T9. Works fine on that but now won't connect to the 206. Have to use my EOBD scanner on that now. Jut be aware that this stuff is a bit flakey.

 

Thanks for the heads up @brilec, it's primarily for my 508, anything else is a bonus so it's a case of in for a penny, in for a pound...or almost 115 of them as I've ordered one from tools4cars at probably double what I could have paid!

Now to downgrade my old laptop to Windows XP...or maybe I'll look to make it dual-boot

 

You need diagbox for later cars planet is for older cars it uses the same interface though if you plan to actually diagnose and fix issues the planet/diagbox is best as most handhelds dont get into many of the systems.

Planet needs XP diagbox does not.

I'm planning on running Win7 Pro as that's the only 32bit OS I have at the moment! Hopefully that will work with Diagbox.

 

TIPS:

During the installation of Planet/Diagbox, do not plug the Lexia interface into the PC until prompted, or the drivers will not install correctly, and you will have to delete and start again.

Do not attempt to install both Planet and Diagbox on the same PC. Diagbox will detect Planet and want to delete it. Diagbox incorporates Planet, so, if you need both, just install Diagbox.

*sigh* it was never going to be easy...

I'll skip over much of it but suffice to say I'm not having a lot of luck installing Diagbox. I have a HP laptop, about 7 years old and I've done a clean install of Windows 7 (32 bit) on it. Following the instructions that came from the supplier I've installed Daemon tools and WinRAR but no matter what I try I get as far as entering the activation code (1234567), I go to the following screen with the 'You must contact the hotline, providing them with the following information blah blah' so Ilk the green tick as per the instructions and I get a message saying "Error during installation of Lexia. You have to reactivate to restart the installation'. Can't get past that point. Mark (eBay reseller) is very helpful but we're not getting anywhere. I don't want to return it but I've been through the installation so many times this past week I could probably do it with my eyes shut!

I tried installing XP from a USB but it won't install that way, I guess I could burn a DVD and try installing it from that but Diagbox is supposed to work on 32 bit Windows 7 and I prefer that as an OS, XP dates back to about 2002 and is regarded as inherently insecure these days!

 

You just need to keep at it it can be a pain to install I have done it a few times now and some install instructions are in the wrong order etc

As for XP vulnerabilities that's only going to be an issue if you go online and you are best not to go online with diagbox or planet as if it connects to Peugeots servers your software will be blocked this might be where you are going wrong

 

I can't suggest anything, but on the matter of security of XP, it is irrelevant, as you should not be connected to the internet when installing and running Planet/Diagbox.

 

Thanks guys, I'll try again with Win7 and then try XP if necessary. I thought the offline bit was to stop mdaemon from trying to activate but I'll try it totally offline then

 

Don't think youll be able to use it on the 508 but should be ok on the 207. I have a 2016 2008 on a 65 plate and my son has a 2008 from 2013. Diagbox only recognises a couple of the ECU's on both of them. I had no issues reading the ecu's on a 61 plate 308 though.

 

Isn't there some kind of special additional box you use between the Lexia3 and the car for the recent models?

It may well work. It could be that my hardware is an older version that causes issues BUT and it's a big but, the highest version of diagbox I could successfully install and run was written before the newer models and does not contain the information needed to communicate with ECU's that were developed after the date of the software.

Newer updates may well have included the newer ecu definitions but alas in my case (and that of others), the updates broke the working diagbox installation requiring complete unintalling then the lengthy re-install of diagbox and the working updates or if you were lucky re-instating the backup taken once the diagbox was working.

If it does work then let us know so those of us with newer cars whose current setup doesn't work can consider getting the same.

I was merely passing on my personal experience with cars from 2013 onwards which was the same experience of a couple of other people I know personally. I very much hope it does work for you as I would like to be able to access both my car and my sons.

 

The reason they are saying it may not work is because the protocols changed around 2016 and the software talks to peugeots servers during diagnostics this is an issue for ALL diagnostic devices not just planet/diagbox.

The box mentioned is to allow diagbox to talk to the fiat based systems on the Van's really as again the software is different nothing to do with newer cars

 

My Diagbox 7.83 is now installed and I've just run diagnostics against my 2016 2.0 GT SW BlueHDI, As suspected some of the ECUs are not recognised which is a pain as I was hoping to be able to diagnose it myself and use a local garage to fix it rather than needing to use main dealer to diagnose it. Still, maybe diagbox will be updated and I'll be able to read all of the ECUs at some point

I've linked the report so anybody interested can see which ECUs cannot be read...and hopefully tell me the fault codes are down to the software and not actual faults!

Is it possible to do any programming via diagbox? I'd like to:

Switch off the driver seatbelt warning - I always wear my belt when driving on the road but there are times when I'm driving on private property at speeds of less than 10mph and the alarm keeps going off. In my previous car I was able to get it turned off. Is that possible in a 508 using diagbox?

Adjust the sensitivity of the front/rear parking sensors - at present they seem to start beeping when I'm about 18" away at the rear or 6" away at the front and I'd like them to start a little earlier than that!
