I have recently bought a Peugeot Partner 09 Van with 116,000 miles on the clock. Most people i have spoken to tell me that this type of milage is normal and there is nothing to worry about. I would like someone to reassure me that there is plenty of live in this engine. The Van is going great but I was not able to get a service history from the seller.

Many people will tell you that these engines are prone to failure, usually relating to the turbo, and that once a turbo goes, unless you have major work done, it'll keep blowing turbos.

They're KINDA right. The truth is that IF the engine has been serviced using the correct oil, the engine will go and go - if someone has decided to save a tenner by using 10w40, the engine will need a major de-coking to keep it servicable.

The lack of service history just takes away your ability to check it's been done properly. The best thing you can do is make sure it IS serviced on time (or early for a couple of services) and gets the correct oil (I THINK it's 5w30 but you should double check this) every time. IF you do have turbo problems, don't just bolt on a new one because the chances are it'll go the same way within about 7000 miles. I know this because my boss at work decided that 10w40 was fine - after all, it's diesel oil! - we have a 56 partner and an 07 berlingo 1.6 HDis sitting around the back of the garage now and theyre both dead - one has had 3 turbos, the other 2 - no extra work was done when they were swapped (even tho he was told extra was needed) :S

Servicing, Servicing, Servicing.

An oil and filter on the 1.6's will come in at less than ÂŁ30 if you do it yourself using quality 5/30, you can get Quartz ECS or MC3 for about ÂŁ24 delivered, filters are usually around ÂŁ4-6.

Personally, I've always done mine at 6,000~ miles, same as my dads old C5 II 1.6 and as a result we've had no real major issues with the engines other than blowing seals which were resolved by using the slightly thicker ones.

His didn't have a DPF, but mine did and I had that removed.

Beyond that the EGR may occasionally need a spring clean if you have an hour to spare and are not afraid of a spanner.

My new C5 suggests that the interval is 20,000 miles, hell no! 10,000 tops!

Nice comfortable and quick vans, no doubt about it but I have to say, I don't miss 'em (we have a pair of 2.0 VW Caddys now) - turbo always kicked in a little too early for me - wheelspin was an everyday event till you got used to it and in the snow *shudder*
