Engine won't crank, no communication with Engine ECU

Having just done a cambelt change and had a coil immediately fail (all repaired and the engine now running much better and the solenoid fault on the gearbox seems to have gone away?).

A week on another issue has arisen. In the last couple of days when starting the car the engine died after a second or so - was then able to get it going again. Now this morning, it would only crank but not fire.

Just been out to car to connect it to Diagbox - and the engine now won't crank at all and the Engine ECU isn't communicating, and the autobox ECU comes back as "unrecognised". All other fitted modules have communicated with Diagbox.

I checked the battery voltage, which is 11.9v. Could this be an issue? What else might suddenly be causing this? Any pointers of where to go next.

It is punishingly cold here this morning with icey rain.

Hi..battery voltage far too low....I suspect if you check the voltage while cranking it probably drops a lot lower......either..charge existing battery or replace with a new one not forgeting the 3 minuit disconect rule...here

I have removed battery from other 307 which is off road at the moment and has a recent battery. That's on charge as well as it's been sitting in a car unused for a while and is also low. I have no idea of the history of the battery in the problematic car before its purchase last year - however, I guess a replacement will be in order.

Right, I have partly charged a battery, up to around 12.6 volts - reconnected it and turned on the ignition.

Car is now in economy mode and still won't crank, ECU still won't communicate with Diagbox and still doesn't recognise the autobox ECU.

Is it normal that the car won't even crank (nothing happens when I turn the ignition key to start position)? Last week when the coil pack failed it went into economy mode and was able to crank?

Might help to give the VIN / RPO

So check fuse PSF1 F8

I'll have a look at the fuses later, working at the moment. Thanks for your help

I had a quick look under the bonnet. The PSF1 looks similar but not the same as the one in the diagram you shared.

Here's the diagbox screenshot from this morning. I checked fuse 8 in the PSF1 - seems to be fine, but when I turn the key to turn the engine over I hear absolutely nothing, no clicking of relays or anything.

I did recently pull the connectors off the ECU to check the wiring continuity for the coil pack that failed, and the alternator wire as that had been flagged up as a fault - all of which checked out.

If the vehicle date is correct, the RPO is 12400 (24.10.2005)

Yes, that's the car. Thanks for the earth points. I am a bit disappointed I need to remove the bumper and headlight or plastic box to get at the earth point - can see the wires but not easy hand access.

I have printed a diagram from Sedre of the Ignition circuit - can't see the double relay for the ECU that powers the latter (It 1304 according to PSA wiring codes and although I found it on the car, I cannot see it on the diagram - Omron 240107 is the part).

Having spent a long time having Engine ECU problems on my 206 project, I am very familiar with the ignition circuit and powering the ECU from this relay. I am surprised I cannot see it on the ignition diagram from Sedre.

Can you help?

There is no other configuration I can find of PSF1 with this engine. The above one is before full CAN / BM34. Then two 307 after the base unit but both of these use the same config I have given of PSF1.

Tried dropping ABS and heap of things, to see if PSF1 ever changed and cannot match what you have. It is pretty clear what I provided is not a match but there is nothing else in the documents to cover it, that I can find.

So... spent some of the day on the car. Had to get a couple of neighbours to push the car out of the drive and into the garage. Put the front of car on stands, removed front bumper and headlight to get to MC10 earth. It was covered in seam sealer, I don't know if that's usual. Anyway, the earth point and four ring terminals had some corrosion on them so cleaned them up, covered them in Vaseline and reconnected... and no difference.

However, this evening I have come across this video on YouTube that has the same characteristics as my car - no power to ECU and no crank. So, I assume that the no crank is due to the PSF no letting the engine crank if the ECU is not powered. So, this is the route that I'll be taking in the morning.

Well, since the last update, it turned out the issue wasn't the PSF1. After sourcing a replacement, it made no difference to the problems being experienced.

Finally, the issue was down to a dead Engine ECU. I have managed to source one and found someone local to virginise. As we don't possess the security code card, I also invested in an Xtool D7W which is capable of retrieving the Security Pin from the BSI without any intervention. Worked successfully and I managed to match the ECU to the BSI yesterday and start the car - first time it's run for 5 weeks.

However, I now need to do the manual configuration of the ECU for the car and apart from the car having an AL4 automatic gearbox, I am not sure of all the parameters I need to select. Maybe time for another thread.

Cheers
