Removal of a battery is the simplest thing in the world you'd think - not on a French car. I watched a YouTube video and I thought - that's it! I found a plastic tab you should press to release the bottom of the battery from the tray but it's still stuck. You need to remove the thing to the left of the battery - whatever it is and I can't find the release button. In the photo it's the thing with the yellow arrow. It should be pulled sraight up but something is holding it back. What is it?

There is a retaining bracket with a lever on the right side of the battery tray and you press the lever to the right and release the bottom of the battery. I was wathcing this YouTube video How to replace the car battery Peugeot 207 1.4 16V 🔋 - YouTube and 1 min into the clip the guy just pulls the whole thing up. I can't see that he's doing anything else.

First of all make sure the battery terminal clamps can't touch anything including the battery terminals. Mine is a different layout but I think you're pointing to the thick bundle of wires for an ecu. At the connection, lever out the retaining clip slightly and it then self-extracts as you lever a bit more (if it's like mine). You may have to cut some cable ties. Is there a retaining bracket holding the bottom of the battery down?
