308 brake light replacement

Morning all,

Long story short, our 308 GTi was damaged by hail some time ago, one of the tail lights was cracked and I replaced it with a second hand tail light from a wrecker. I’ve just noticed that, although the tail light functions work (which I checked at the time) the brake lights aren’t as bright as the other side when you’re following the car.

I thought I might be able to pull the LEDs out of the original tail light and fit them to this one, but there doesn’t seem to be a simple way to separate the lens or dismantle the light (even after removing the three small hex screws).

Has anyone had experience with brake lights failing or luck pulling apart the rear lights? After a quick google I assume they’re not a common failure point.

Thanks in advance,
Ben

I'm presuming your high level brake light is ok and we're talking about the body brake-light cluster units? I've not had to replace mine as yet but normally there are either clips on the unit to separate the lens from the back or the bulbs simply twist out. Perhaps if you post pictures it may help people with being able to offer advice further.
Thanks mate. Yes, the actual brake light - the permanent LEDs that are built into the light unit (not a replaceable screw out bulb).

Ignore the washing machine in the boot, but you can see the RHS light is much more dim in this pic.

If no one has pulled the clusters apart, I assume it’s a full tail light replacement for the 308 if the brake light LEDs fail?

Haha yes, I thought it would fit in, so close! Luckily only going around the block.

Thanks for that mate. Not too expensive. I’ll just have to grab another one if there isn’t a simple way to swap the innards over.
