Hi, Im new here and hope somebody can offer some advise. I have a Peugeot 206 cc 1.6 Quicksilver Convertible (2004) and every time i start the engine when it is cold, it makes a screeching sound, the engine will then cut out at the first junction i break and but start again.

This only happens when its cold and at first i thought it could be the fan belt making the noise but i had this changed and it made no difference.

Somebody mentioned that it may be the starter motor... can anybody shed any light? If so, point me in the right direction to buy a reconditioned / used starter motor for my vehicle???

Thanks guys!

We had a screeching alternator belt which we had changed a month ago with the timing belt & water pump.

We had one episode of cutting out and the stop light coming on but I'm not convinced they were related to one another.

What kind of mileage have you got on your car? I only ask as one of the more technically experienced guys on here might need it to help you out.

Also, don't forget to introduce yourself in the intro forum as that may help your thread get flagged up to someone in the know :) (ie someone might not visit the 206 forum normally but may help if they see an introduction with a brief bit about your issue)

How long does it carry on for after the engine starts? If it stops when you release the key the it could very well be the starter motor, If not it could be the alternator bearings as it is under its heaviest load when the car has just been started and quieten when the charge has been restored to the battery. The cutting out problem is unlikely to be related, is it diesel or petrol?
