Yr speedo my Tacho

Hi Tony,

My Tacho gave up last night. Looking thru Haynes, both the Tacho & Speedo are controlled from the same ECU. It has a diagnostic connector - somewhere, so next step is a garge to read any fault codes. That should tell me whether its just the tacho, a sensor or the dash ECU thats gone.

I suspect thatas if only the tacho OR the speedo gives up then its that meter or the ecu. But need a fault code to confirm.

Suspect you need to do the same?

Anyone else know more? PLease!

Cheers

Stepper motor

My wife's Speedo failed recently and the local Peugeot garage wanted to charge 590 Euros to replace the entire instrument cluster!!!

I found this forum and took Posoo's advise (see earlier posting), ordering a new speedometer case (39 Euros). I then realised it might be the Speedo stepper motor (65 Euros) so I ordered that too, on the same website. They arrived from Finland after just a few days and after reviewing a video on YouTube demonstrating how to remove the panel I accessed the inner workings of the speedo and replaced the speedo stepper motor only, which in fact has it's own case so the speedometer case that I had ordered was not necessary. I have since sent that back and have been promised a 39 Euro refund. The speedo now works perfectly well, and my wife now thinks I'm wonderful (hope that lasts!).

A couple of points though......it's not easy to get inside the instrument cluster. Once you have removed it from the car patience is needed as you work around the unit to find the various latches and gradually work the unit out of it's shell. I figured I had nothing to lose if I made a mess of things, as Peugeot would just change the whole thing anyway.

I made myself comfortable at the kitchen table with the unit on a large hobby tray, a few tools, and a coffee. I broke a few small latches unfortunately but a bit of tape kept it all in place afterwards, and it's all hidden beneath the dash anyway. Also, take a photo of the needle positions on all the other instruments before starting, because you will be taking all the needles off to access the stepper motor, and need to know where they were pointing when you put them back on! The electric contact needles on the new speedo stepper motor were much longer than the ones on the old one, so I carefully clipped them to size. Works a treat! :thumb:

You could try removing the front cover of the instruments, using a small flat screwdriver to work the speedo pointer loose, and then re-positioning it to read correctly. It will take trial and error, but is exactly what I intend to do as I have yet to calibrate the one I fixed. For the moment I have guessed the position required, but when we get the chance we'll take two cars out on the local roads with our walky-talky's to compare speedo readings, and then I'll adjust my wife's as necessary. It should be a 10 minute job.

Thank you for your Reply. My speedo stopped working and I followed your instructions . I swapped the stepper motor around with the one on my rev counter . The speedo works fine now. The rev counter does not work. I know now that I need a new stepper motor.

Hi all. We have a 2002, 206 CC that developed the lazy speedo issue.
it turns out this is an easy and inexpensive fix. Not counting the half hour ‘diagnostic’ by Peugwot.
The 206 speedo and tachometer have a plastic shaft holding the needle. This shaft can crack and not hold the needle. The needle can turn on the shaft and show an incorrect value. Had the shaft replaced for $55 Aud at a gauge repairer. Back to accurate speed now.
