This could be easy way to to check if there is a new or old chain in 1.5 hdi.

  • take of black engine cover
  • visually check if this part in circle (camshaft cover under black hose) is flat or it has "hump" on that part in circle.

Old camshaft cover is relatively flat (pictures 1 and 2).
New camshaft cover has a little hump there (picture 3).

You can also feel that "hump" by touching that part of camshaft cover, just be careful not to touch hot engine.

Regardless of where i bought the car from it is still less than 5yrs old and has sustained significant engine damage due to a substandard chain which peugeot are aware of, so i will be going after peugeot as they put the chain on the car and have since changed the spec as they know it is snapping. Where i bought it from is irrelevant if there is a manufacturers fault!
Sorry I know this is an older post but I bought a second hand Peugeot Rifter from a car dealer and the engine went on it, I since learned that my vehicle has the 7m chain and that it snapped just before my first service was due, (8000/8 months driving) this is a 69 plate and I have been told the 20 plate onwards Rifter has a thicker 8m chain, did you have any luck with your case? Thz

CamShaft - Repair Authorised by Peugeot Warranties -My 3008 currently in the garage with the same issue - Sept 2019 plate GTI Line - 34k miles. Independent and Dealer serviced but out of warranty.
Local dealership Service manager is aware of this fault and informed me of a TSB currently in force. Both he and I contacted Peugeot Customer Service and after jumping through some hoops and collecting missing service docs Peugeot UK have actually authorised a full repair under this TSB doc Phew!!! . Replacement parts have been ordered but awaiting CamShaft Kit and 1 other part. This issue has been "Escalated" so awaiting info from UK Spares as to when the part is available. Let me know if you want more info.

I have just had this issue happen with my Vauxhall Grandland which I believe is also the same engine. October 2018 var with 70k on the clock, camshaft chain snapped on starting - no advanced warning or anything. I’m waiting in Vauxhall to identify what the full extent of the damage is, hopefully today/tomorrow. Did the peugot Dealership offer that there was an TSB or did you have to challenge them?

Does anyone know if I can confirm from my VIN number if I have an affected engine?

Dealership said that it might be covered under a Peugeot warranty as it was a known manufacturing fault. The car had to meet certain criteria re the Service Schedule , Oil and Filter type etc. The TSB number came from this thread. Peugeot Customer Service and my local dealership worked together (with my input!) to get this result. Dealership gets paid a hefty packet from Peugeot for carrying out the work so its in there interest to support the customer.

Vauxhall have basically laughed in my face, said it would of been covered up to 5 years but as its past 5 years old (5 years 10 months) then tough luck. They know its an issue, the customer service rep pretty much admitted it, said he has said no to any goodwill contribution to multiple people.

Lesson learnt - never buy a vauxhall.

Hello please can I have more info out 2019 308 gt line has been in garage since May and they can’t source the part so I’m wanting to go through Peugeot now

Settled on a price with the dealership to repair - but PSA have no parts available!!!!!
Was told exactly the same thing by PSA and the dealership but after a second call a week later they promised to escalate my "case" number to Priority 1. It took a long time initially to get authority for the repair under warranty but after just 2 weeks of PCS placing the order for the spares I got notification that they would be at the dealership within a few days. This was after initially being told it could take up to 3 months for spares to arrive! Result:). Just waiting for a call to pick up the car and receive paperwork. Case still in the hands of PCS until I'm happy with the repair

Contact Peugeot Customer Services direct if your not having any luck with the dealership. Make sure you document every stage of the request. Dates, times, spares inability, Problem etc. If your car is under 5 years old when the fault first occurred and you have full service history you shouldn't have a problem other than jumping through a few hoops. Cars over 5 years or a certain mileage may be rejected.

Keep calling PSA don't wait for them to call you! Still believe that this is a case of "Non Disclosure" to a buyer during the purchase process. No information revealed at all about this fault and told by the dealership that they had no knowledge of the TSB. Proved them wrong on almost every point. Depending on what happens I may challenge my dealership that I was miss sold the car as not all of the cars maintenance, service history and re-calls were provided at point of purchase. Falls under the heading "Non Disclosure"
