1.5hdi DV5 - Camshaft chain problem?

Hello, I recently came across an article from a French journalistic publication, in which they describe a problem with the camshaft chain in these engines. They even show where the problem is and how to solve it. There are also part numbers which are defective and which do not cause problems. Has anyone had such problems? Have you heard of this defect? Do you think there could be a service campaign?

Hi Lynnem,

Did you manage to get any success with the ombudsman? My chain has just gone on my 5008. My independent garage has also found 2 valves damaged. He has contacted peugeot for the parts and they haven't got any and couldn't give an eta. They offered to diagnose the problem for around £180. If they see it as a manufacturing fault from the diagnostics then they will cover all costs and refund the diagnostic cost. But if it turns out not to be a manufacture fault (which I believe they will ultimately try to argue) then they will put all the cost on me.

So i wanted to know if you managed any success with the ombudsman so i can have a leg to stand on if they try any funny business. My independent garage has looked through the car and engine and can't find anything that would cause a cam belt to break. It's only around 60k on the clock so hoping their diagnostic also comes to a similar conclusion and accept liability.

Many thanks in advance

I will do. I've already battled the dealer who sold me the car and warranty and got £3k towards the repair. The car should be fully fixed this week and I'll go to the ombudsman with the remainder cost (expect to be a further £1k) that I'll go after peugeot for. My case is read to submit ...wish me luck!!

Sorry that's my fault for not being clear. It isn't peugeot who have paid towards it yet. I bought the car from an independent dealership with an extended warranty that had a single repair limit of £3k. Short version is warranty declined the claim as it turned out the dealer didn't do the full service they said they had done and applied for my warranty with...invalidating it...so i threatened them with trading standards etc and the £3k is now covered. I'll go after peugeot for the rest. It's been a very stressful experience!! Joys 😫

Regardless of where i bought the car from it is still less than 5yrs old and has sustained significant engine damage due to a substandard chain which peugeot are aware of, so i will be going after peugeot as they put the chain on the car and have since changed the spec as they know it is snapping. Where i bought it from is irrelevant if there is a manufacturers fault!

The l'Argus article quoted above says PSA will pay 100% of the repair cost if the vehicle is under 5 years/150,000km and has been serviced according to the schedule with approved parts and fluids. They have an algorithm to split the cost if these conditions are not met. Obviously this is in French only, because French drivers would set fire to the PSA head office if they tried to get away with making the customer bear the cost, whereas Coventry is already a post apocalyptic wasteland so no British owners are going to waste their time with direct action which nobody would even notice

Update on my Berlingo, Citroen are paying for a full engine replacement as it's inside the 5yr/150,000km window. No word on when that will happen, it's been sat at the garage 2 months already. My garagiste was aware of the issue and gave me to believe that the chain manufacturer is getting the bill in the end, obviously PSA have cut a deal whereby they stitch up their customers by not issuing a recall, in order to keep the cost to their supplier down

Great news and thanks for the update. Did they offer you a courtesy car? I was told I'd be given a courtesy from the moment of diagnostics. My big issue is that the earliest they can diagnose is the 4th of Dec so I'm unable to drive the car at all.

My car is also within 5 yrs but will go over from 31st October. I will have to bring this up with them as their earliest date to diagnose will take me over 5 yrs. I know you're citroen and I'm peugeot but I'm hoping they sort my issue out too.

Sorry to hear that. Hope they sort you a courtesy soon until you get your car back. I'll be happy if they admit to the fault and accept to fix the problem as its becoming pretty expensive if I try to do it on my own at a local garage. It doesn't help that peugeot don't seem to have the parts for the repair so I'd have to use something like ebay where the garage has said they can't take responsibility if it breaks down as the parts may not be genuine.

Thanks for again for the update. Would you by any chance have any correspondence from them of the issue incase peugeot claim to be oblivious of such a fault? It could be a life saver for me.
