Not 100% true only a few USB hubs work with the systems.

The firmware needs to support the hub hardware or it will not see the extra hub ports

You're perfectly right, I bought 3 different and expensive hubs and none works.

The problem is not the firmware. The first version (5.15.29.42-r0) already supported USB hubs. It's the power needed for the devices to work properly - powered hubs might work better.
Google Android Auto and/or Apple CarPlay might have problems working through the HUB, when everything else works fine - charging and flash drives.

I have 3 different powered usb hubs and none of them work, at least on my car, built 2017.

I seem to remember there being a separate thread regarding powered hubs, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Indeed, there is an other thread abour usb hubs including powered ones. Just do a search because links to threads don't work here, on this forum.
