I have a 3.0 ltr V6 607 petrol and it has done 80K. I have looked at the timing belt it appears ok despite the considerable length.
At what mileage should it be replaced and how difficult is it to do?

Unless it's hanging by a thread, it is not possible to jusdge to condition of the belt with a visual inspection.

It's not an especially difficult job, but it's not one for a novice either, and is a fiddly time consuming task. You'll need a tension gauge and, as aforementioned, the proper service tools for the job.

Probably not such an issue on your car, but 406 owners usually discover at this point that a cheap V6 is an expensive way to save money.
