My car is a 307 XSE 2003 model. Ever since a recent auto trans overhaul the cruise control (I strongly suspect) has 'self activated' on 2 occasions when accelerating at around 40-50 kph! Both occasions occurred in traffic and only heavy braking prevented a rear end collision.

After the first time the auto specialist checked the ECU faults and found 1 error:

'Intermittent Fault
Cruise control
Speed limitation. Coherence'

At the time of the first occurrence the driver's floor mat was loose and there was a suspicion that it may have jammed the accelerator. The cruise control was working satisfactorily it seemed. I repaired the mat and a month passed without event before the second occurrence, at which time I saw the accelerator finally 'release itself' once I was stationary.

I have been in the habit of leaving the cruise control rotary switch in the 'on position' since the cruise speed setting was lost each time the engine is switched off. Clearly this is not a good idea!

Everything is pointing to the cruise control but perhaps it is throttle related? Any other experiences in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

the accelerator pedal don't stay down when cruise control is turned on (if it is original), so if you saw the pedal stuck in activated position, the pedal must be faulty

Thanks Holt. It is the original cruise control(CC). Since it is a Bosch fly by wire accelerator I assumed there must have been a CC solenoid holding the throttle open. The rapid acceleration was as if the car was trying to resume CC preset speed plus it was ignoring the brake peddle.
Maybe the throttle just jammed.
