Had to take the 107 to get a tyre replaced yesterday and was appalled to see the tyre fitter place a large head jack under the cill seam and jack it up. This of course chewed up the seam and then he proceeded to kick, so hard it made the car move, at the face of the alloy with the flat of his foot because it was seized onto the disc. The wheel came flying off and he caught it before it hiit the arch.

None of the seams were previously damaged in any way as the car is well looked after.

I pointed out the damage to the seam and was told that it was 'normal' as 'this is the jacking point.' The maager eventually bothered to come over when he realised I wsn't going to pay until he'd listened to my moan. He agrreed that it was 'normal' too.

I pointed out that the jacking point is designed for the factory supplied jack NOT any old jack especially a cupped trolley jack. They should have used a rubber pad and lifted it on the chassis rail as any other garage or tyre fitter has ever done. He looked surprised and agreed with me that it would have been better. Not rocket science is it?

He grabbed a pair of plers and attempted to straighten out the damage. Then he asked for payment. No discount, just a weak apology. I've contacted the H/O but nothing from them.

Am I alone in believing that it's not 'normal' to damage a customers car or to mistreat it in such a way?

That's one of the reasons I refuse to use the 'big name' tyre places. I use a back street garage that looks like the place is about to fall down but they use pneumatic bellows to lift cars. They take care to do the job right. From a distance it looks like they are a cowboy outfit but you won't find better service anywhere else.

The seams where the jacking points are only have stregnthening at the actual jacking points. either side it's very easy to bend but if they are supposed to be specialists then they should know how to raise the car without damaging it. I'd also be concerned about them damaging the underbody protection. If they have compromised the protection then surely they would be liable for the cost of repairing to manufacturers standards to preserve the anti corrosion warranty.

what utter cowboys......with modern jacks with rubber blocks or even air bags as previously mentioned there should be NO damage to any part of the car when jacking up...what a shower...lack of training.... lack of care..lack of customer service...take pics and send them to their h/o......dont be fobbed off.....

Thanks chaps, I was wondering if it was just me that thought it wasn't 'normal'.

It was the nearest tyre place to where I was, otherwise I would have used my usual fitter.

I suppose I should have acted on my hunch and driven away when the lad that had approached me to change the tyre said he wanted to finish his cigarette first....:nono:

I have taken pictures (and a video of the less than hand tight locking nut that I discovered 10 miles later when I checked the nuts.:eek:)

Nothing from H/O yet, but if the manager of HiQ in Bath ( oops, named and shamed) says it's normal then I doubt that my complaint will be taken seriously at a higher level either.

Just because THEY see it as normal does not make it acceptable any sensible garage knows that cars are fragile on the sills and they should be lifted where possible on the chassis

Transit sills for example can collapse so much when jacked that the doors wont open !!

You found one of the bolts loose too? That's a serious safety issue. Obviously the next cigarette was more important than finishing the job.
Don't know if Trading Standards get involved in things like this but it would be worth asking.

I could contact Trading Standards, or whoever the relevant body are. I did take a video rather than just a pic of the loose nut, but it could turn into a 'prove it was us' type scenario. They (reputable fitters) usually advise to check the nuts after 100 miles or so, but this was after 10 miles so clearly not done up at all.

If I don't hear anything back early next week, maybe I should take it further. After all it's not my car, it's my daughters and I was getting the tyre done while she was at work. If I hadn't checked the nuts, she would not have.

EDIT: Just emailed the Local Environment Authority as they deal with tyre fitters, exhaust centres, valeters according to the HSE/MVR.

Well they aren't going to say "We are a bunch of incompetent cowboys who don't give a toss about our customers or their cars." are they?.:rolleyes::p:)

That's odd, I posted a couple more humourous quotes from their website, but that post has vanished?

Here they are again, because I reckon they are worth posting:

The manager is quoted on the website as saying:
"We are extremely proud to be servicing the area for an excess of 50 years at this location. We have a very loyal customer base and are pleased to receive no complaints for our services.":lol:

You couldn't make it up...except you can, because that's clearly what they've done.

hi...the idea of my quote was to include it in a letter explaining your disappointment of the fitter damaging your car...(can you post the pics)..and have you had any follow up from them?

Images needs to be available online somewhere - postimg.io makes it pretty simple though.
Go to the site, select (if wanted, resizing and/or expiration. Select image and done!.
Copy paste the 'Direct Link:' text from the results page into your post between [ IMG ] and [ /IMG ] (without the extra spaces after/before the square brackets.

As reliable406 said, the best place is lifting via the chassis - the jacking points are only really for roadside wheel swaps.

That's why all decent garages use 4 post lifts.

Even if using a jack, it's not too difficult to get the jack underneath the chassis. And vulcanised rubbers are cheap enough - for the sake of a fiver, they prevent unnecessary damage.

I've had issues with independent tyre fitters leaving nuts loose. Yes, they do work loose on occasion, it happens. But, there is no excuse for not tightening to specified the torque. Also, not balancing the wheel with new tyres, incorrectly aligning wheels....

They also replaced my missus 6 year old tyres with 12 year old part worns.

At least with a bigger company, you generally have a complaints procedure, and some level of accountability.

In all fairness to HiQ I'd like to just update this farce.

I had a call this morning from the Director of the parent company of HiQ, who couldn't apologise enough. It falls well below his expectations of his staff and he offered to do the tracking for free or a free tyre or whatever to help restore faith in HiQ.

The young lad in question has been 'talked to' and my complaint appears to have been supported at the branch. Maybe it's not the frst time he's 'fallen below expectations'.

Unfortunately, I won't be taking him up on his offer because my daughters car has now been written off by a tractor.:mad:
