Cab someone tell me how the Traction Control facility works on an X250 van?

I have been given various suggestions, such as that it limits the power to the wheels until they stop spinning, or that it applies the brakes to the spinning wheel(s) and thus acts like a form of limited-slip differential.

Is it worth having (it costs another £400+), or should I save my money?
