Now I have got some more direction to follow in the repair of my abs fault, I have another slightly annoying issue I also need to deal with, my intermittent faulty temperature gauge.

Some days it's fine and it works and others it doesn't!! Then other days it does then it doesn't and does and doesn't!!!

When it works it's fine and reads normal engine temp, when it doesn't, it rises off it's stop but never actually reads a temperature on the gauge!!!

It started after the cambelt change, which I did myself, but I never touched the sender unit! I undone and removed the bottom hose to drain the system and replaced the complete water pump and housing but never touched the sender.

Coincidence maybe?

Anyone had a similar issue or should I just get a sender unit?

The car temperature never runs above the middle of the gauge anyway and tbh I've never heard the radiator cooling fun cut in, but I do listen to the radio all the time so it may well have! Are the sender unit and fan switch seperate units or combined in one??? I have a haynes manual but it's very generic across the engines in this subject and doesn't give much detail.

Any info would be appreciated.

Yep , all bled up and circulating correctly!!
Heaters work properly and get hot even when the gauge doesn't!!
Anyway that was well over a year ago, I would say it would have bled any airlock through by now. It's never boiled over and doesn't drop any coolant and the level never really changes!

forgive my feeble mindedness but Gibbo, whats a sender?

my 307 2.0 hdi 110bhp has a similar intermittent temp gauge, never goes over 90, sits happily just below mid but when cruising and free wheeling down hil (save fuel) it moves up and down.

doesnt bother me too much as engine never over heats but would like it sorted.

A sender unit or sender for short is the sensor mounted in the cooling system, sometimes inline in a pipe or normally somewhere nearby the thermostat housing that senses the engine coolant temperature and 'sends' that signal to the temp gauge. Modern cars have systems work where it passes through the engine ecu as this temperature affects fuelling and ignition timing on both petrol and diesels! Some cars have individual sensors and senders for temp gauge and cooling fan control and other cars the two are combined in one item!
