Peugeot 107 2008, auto.. no AC..

Daughter broke down yesterday very close to home. Lots of lights on the dash and not starting. Up until that point she had been travelling...
Lifting the bonnet I spotted the aux / alternator belt snapped and loose..
Towed car home and although i'm no mechanic it looked and easy job to replace belt...
Belt obtained, fitted.. Battery was flat so put on charge...

Now I have engine turning over but no start.. Stop, engine and battery lights all on the dash..

Any ideas on what it could be or what to check ??
Will I need one of those fault readers ??

With the key in the ignition but the ignition off, does the car chime when you open the drivers door ??

If it doesn't chime then the system has lost the key chip code and will need re-programming which will need the PIN from the security card you should have with the vehicle documents.

If it does chime then maybe a BSI reset will cure the problem

Did you check all the pulleys are free before fitting the new belt as if the alternator is seized for example it can slow the engine cranking enough to stop it starting.

If that's fine it could be the belt has damaged a sensor on its way off if your very unlucky the belt segments got into timing chain and threw timing out but that's unlikely.

Thanks I will check on the door chime..
Something I have never noticed if it does even do that normally..

I turned water pump by hand and that seemed fine...
Got the wife to turn it over and i watched the belt, that seemed allright and going around ok.... the old belt looked like a complete snap.. A couple if fine cuts on one side but virtualy intact...

Someone has said to try the spare key, so will give that a go tomorrow.

BSI reset ... Ok found a link for that now... :)

Running..

Had battery on charge overnight and re-connected this morning.
I used the spare key and "bingo" fired straight away.....
The main key when tried did not work, so the issue seems to be in the key coding..

2 things that I will mention in case it helps anyone..
After it all started I put a volt meter on the battery, engine off and got 16-17v. This may be down to the fact the battery has not long come off charge but I have never seen a reading that high... So there is doubt in my head as to the state of the battery. Engine running was the same.. Will wait a few hours and re-test again.

I left the engine warming while I re-fitted the front panel.. Suddenly there was a real change in engine noise and a sort of grinding.. I am now suspecting that maybe the water pump is on it's way out.. Maybe this was the reason the belt snapped in first place..

Check the alternator as well, water pumps normally rumble a bit before they fail.

It was a bit noisey before but I don't drive it much as my daughter is always moaning about some noise or other !!
Have it booked in with a localish Peugeout independant garage for a full service and water pump change for next week. Not driving it till then as does sound real bad now..
Fingers crossed on the alternator as I am getting no warning lights...

But you have had a warning. 17 volts across the battery.
That tells me the voltage regulator is bad, It's part of the alternator. Back in the day I used to replace faulty regulators. However customers often came back soon afterwards because their alternator had developed another fault, and as they had just paid to have it fixed they didn't see why they should pay again. I gave up and simply replaced the whole unit from then.
Has your water pump been diagnosed as faulty by a competent mechanic?. Or is it booked in for a diagnosis and repairs as required?.
If you book your car in for a water pump and it doesn't cure the problem, well you instructed the garage to do the work. Some garages will tell you your fault isn't what you said, but if the service receptionist has given the job to the mechanic saying "Service and new water pump" and the mechanic doesn't check it out first because work is backing up, then it will end up badly.

Voltage resolved..!! :)
Even though my multimeter display all lit and i assume it was fine. Turned out the internal 9v battery was low.. Checked car this morning and got 17v n engine running, tested meter on my other car, same 17v so the meter became suspect. Changed 9v internal battery and now have 12.6v at rest and 14.5v with engine running.. One of those daft things that can really throw you out..

On pump, it's a small garage that only does Peugeot cars. Not a main dealer or anything fancy with things like a receptionist.. I will get his thoughts first but everything is pointing at the water pump.

I don't dabble in cars much and knowledge i have is more old school british 70's when you could only afford a banger and had to do some jobs yourself.. However I am pleased just to have done the belt myself... I would have maybe had a go at the water pump BUT only just had a recent heart attack, so messing about under cars is not advised just yet..

Car back from local small garage / Peugeot specialist..
Full service and a new water pump. £190..

Running a treat now....
However looks like the main key with the central locking buttons is duff, they were unable to get it sorted there so my next task will be to source a cheapish replacement.
