My 407SW (1.6 HDi) is in need of a service and I'd like to use the same garage that's serviced all my cars, but having owned only more basic cars previously (Fiesta etc), I'm wondering if it's necessary to go to a Peugeot dealer.

I really don't want to pay main dealer price unless I have to. I'd much rather give the business to the guys I know and trust, so I suppose what I need to know is what sort of tasks are performed during a routine service that need specialised Peugeot equipment?

Also, I'm really not happy with the low speed 'pull-away' performance and leaned in an earlier thread that the best way to tackle this is to have the engine 'remapped'. I've found a company that will guarantee an improvement or refund my money and return the settings to as they were, so I'm going to have this done soon. Does anybody know whether it's best to have the service done before or after the remapping?

Remapping will not affect a service done on your car ,they say it does the warranty if you have any left, (if they know) there are others that say that a remap can be seen by a Peugeot garage i doubt this as the peugeot head mechanic that does my work took my car into a dealers and looked for the remap with i take it planet Diag and couldn`t see anything out of the ordinary.

I would reckon dealers if you wish to keep a full dealer history.. However, DONT let them choose what service is required... Just ask for a 41 point service, usually £89 to £99.. (everything is done in a similar way for £375 service)

The dealers cant see if it has been remapped.. unless they go out and look for it.. which they wont as time is money..

Good news that it makes no difference whether I have the remapping or service first. I'll have the service because there is an issue with smelling diesel fumes inside whilst at a standstill (disappears as soon as the car's moving) and I suspect an exhaust leak and maybe a cracked heating pipe/duct and they can look at this at the same time.

I'd still like to know a little more about the equipment used and if there's anything a main dealer can do that a smaller garage can't.

I've heard 'planet' mentioned several times. Would I be right in assuming that this is an advanced (expensive) diagnostic tool used in servicing? Is it specific ti Peugeot?

What questions should I ask a non-Peugeot-specific garage to see if they can carry out a service properly?

9 times out of 10 the diesel fumes in the engine bay and cabin when stopped will be one or more of the injector seals leaking....
Pull off the 16valve cover and have alook in and around each injector and if
you see a blackish substance around the injector(s) this means the seal(s)
need replacment.
seals are cheap but the injector will have to come out...don't leave it to long as it will make it more difficult to remove the injector and the compression leaking past the seals which may score/pit were the injector seal sits in the head....
