Hi there,

I have recently bought a 2002 307 XSi 2.0 from private sale. I am a little disappointed because the guy sold it t me as working fine no issues. Took it for a test drive all seemed OK. However having now driven it, it has become apparent that there is a problem as the car shakes when turning over in neutral. Additionally there is a rattle from the engine when you accelerate through second and third gear. I have lifted the bonnet and the engine does seem to bounce around quite a bit and the rattling is audable when you rev the engine in neutral. My suspicions are either Engine Mount or injectors. I dont know how much an engine mout issue would cost to fix but I have seen people quoting about £100/injector to replace. If all four are replaced that make £400, which I dont have at the minute. I have also seen people saying that if your injectors need replacing then your shouldnt drive the car as you can damage the engine.

So I guess I have a number of questions.
1. Assuming the problem is engine mount I presume that you need a fair amount of special equipment as I guess you have to pretty much remove and remount the engine, Thus this is a garage job?
2. Assuming it is the injectors, how difficult are these to replace? Assuming I can get instructions by way of Haynes Manual or similar could I do this at home with basic tools?
3.Whilst the shaking is irritating it is bearable and as long as im not going to damage the car I would be happy to drive it for a month or so until I have the money to get it fix professionally?
4. How much am I likely to be looking at to get engine mount repaired?

As the car does not have a service history I would be happy to do interim servicing myself so I dont mind spending some money if there are tools required that I am likely to use again in the future.

Thanks in advance

hi, is it petrol or diesel?

if its a diesel i would leave the injectors well alone as no doubt the engine will be common rail which means the injectors and fuel have loads of pressure can cause injury/death if not released properly. they also need torque back up to the required manufacturer stated levels for safety. i think its different in petrols but please double check and if like i say its diesel leave to a specialist.

as for engine mounts there is a guy on here who recently replaced his and made a guide (i think) check the forum using the search or go back to forum home list and check under how to section.

but being the age of the car, i would say a bit of vibration is ok as it is a big lump and engines do age and get more movement.

the rattle could also be clutch/flywheel related or even heat shield related.

you can ask someone on here, who lives local and owns planet to hook up and do some injector testing to make sure its in the injectors...

as for your own service, make sure you have:
- a good screwdriver set (torx included)
- a socket set.
- a good pair of ramps will do some good aswell as working under a car with just using a jack is unsafe.
- a bucket or oil container (found in halfords) to collect the oil and make it easy to transport to local disposal

as you say the car has no service history, when was the cam belt last replaced? as that will have the highest priority then even attempting to fix those issues.

Its 2.0 XSi petrol engine. i have been told that the cam belt is about 2 years old but there is no paperwork to back this up. im gonna get the cam done anyway in a month or two. the vibrations are more than just age.

thanks for the reply.

nah....a good socket set and a decent spanner set a jack and some axle stands....

Ive never done any on these but they cant be that hard.....not impossible anyway...again good sockets and spanners and screwdrivers.....and yes at home....

These engines are known to have a rattling heat shield at the exhaust, mine have it for sure, driving the wife nuts, but i have gotten used to it. I have seen i the service history of my car, that it have been welded before, guess i need to take it to my friend who have a lift, to take a look from underneath :thumb:
