Hello all,
Popped down the shops and heard a nasty scraping from the rear when I applied the brakes. Had a look and sure enough the outer pad on the rear offside is metal to metal. Took my time and got home safely and decided to check out the parts online. I was shocked by how many variations of rear Discs & Pads are there for these vehicles!!!

Can anyone help me identify the parts required? I have looked through the 307 section of the forum and have found some references but nothing conclusive!!

Is there any way (Database) that I can input my vehicle details to determine what parts I need to order?

I can supply registration/VIN etc but not sure of how much info is safe to put online.

I have a 307 SW 1.6HDi 2006

Thanks in advance for any/all assistance :D

Hi, just changed the rear pads on my 307cc. Just popped my reg into the eurocar parts website and they bring up all the required parts for your car. Pads cost £13 and £21 for the fronts. Youll need a rewind tool as well

Hi Storeman,
Thanks very much for the info :thumb: I feel violated  you know so much about my car

That's perfect, top man

Hi Arc,
Thanks for your info, unfortunately there are different size/types of both front and rear discs and two systems for the rear pads. Were yours Bosch or Lucas? That is why I started this thread

I have a full wind back kit thanks.

Now I know the hub diameter and the braking system type I can order the correct kit

Great site, keep up the good work :thumb:

It is a great forum but it would be a lot better if everybody who asks for help keeps their thread updated and when the problem is solved they let the members know. I am not getting at any one individual person with this comment but it is generic to other forums too. In fact this forum is one of the better ones. I use Seat, Suzuki Jimny and others and the amount of time you have members putting the effort in to help people and then they cannot be bothered to either tell us they have given up on the car or have got it fixed but cannot be bothered to let the helpers know and thank them is annoying. After all that is how our knowledge base gets better on the feedback we get.
Moan over!!

As a continuation of the above job I have now purchased new rear discs, pads, hub nut and cover.

The original discs/pads were in a terrible state, the discs were badly corroded and the inner face was distorted beyond belief. How this passed it's MOT prior to me buying it is beyond me!!!

I decided to replace as much as possible and cleaning the general area and never kept the original hub nuts

Looked in the Haynes manual and there is no mention of the torque setting for said hub nut :nono: however the manual tells you to mark the hub nut and spindle for refitting

Does anyone know what the setting is?

Wasn't sure if I should have started a new thread!

Regards.......

Yes to a new thread. It costs nowt and it makes it easier for searches and when somebody wants to add info and has not got the time to scan pages of entries.
My Haynes shows rear hub nut torque as 210Nm (155lb/ft) and has a asterix against it that says DO NOT RE-USE as it does the caliper bolts. They say that as the originals come coated with thread lock but you can put your own on the ones you took out. Personally I have removed lots of caliper bolts through the 50 odd years I have been playing with cars and never once used the stuff. As long as they are torqued to the correct figure and done correctly the bolts will not come out or loosen. When I say torqued correctly I mean by tighten them down so that they are fully in and then use the torque wrench to set the correct torque. Some people seem to think that you tighten them down really tight and then use the torque wrench to see if they have reached that figure not actually to SET that figure. I watched the exact thing happen the other night on an episode of Wheeler Dealers where he used a air impact wrench to whizz the nuts/bolts on and then checked the torque. The bolts/nuts did not move, you just heard the breakout of the wrench go at the figure they should have been. Its the same at most tyre places too. Crazy because it means they are actually overtightening the fittings and putting them under too much stress. No amount of thread lock will help that coupling!

Thanks again for the answers (Jimmymarsbar & Madbadandold), I'll get on with fitting new discs & pads and get back with my findings :thumb:

I know what you mean with regards to torque settings, seen loads of people do exactly what you've described on my many track/race days on my motorbike. I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to torque settings so I've now made a note in the back of my manual :p:D

I'll start a new thread if I come across any other issues

I did not think the nuts where thread locked on the stub axle i thought they were staked. i have in the past swapped old nuts between sides so the stake position changes and re used the nuts

Hi Windy1603,
The axle nut isn't thread locked, as you said there is a notch in the stub so you can make a dent in the head of the nut to stop it moving (once at the correct torque setting) :thumb:
The reference for thread-lock is for the two T50 caliper bolts

OK noted. Having not yet done one I made an ASS UM ption that clearly meets the requirements of the word! In that case I would replace with new nut. I was going to remove the hub on the rear of my car but read that the hub, when pulled off, leaves the inner race on the stub axle so did not bother. I was replacing the brake discs and was going to clean and paint the back plate but left it. I had to replace the caliper and brake pipe as I had trouble with resetting the caliper. Removing the pipe union resulted in finding the steel pipe had reacted with the ali casting and the thread was badly damaged as there was nothing left of it!

The mot test requires a visual check (Without removing or dismantling anything) and a rolling road check. If the pads cannot be seen they cannot be failed. Corrosion of the discs is normally an advisory matter, unless the disc is clearly wery badly worn. If the brakes meet the minimum standard required on the rolling road test, and they don't have to work anything new brakes, then it passes.
An mot pass is no indication that a vehicle is in good working order, just that it met the minimum standard required on the day of the test.

Roger.
