Hi,

Looking for advice please, for the past couple of months my car has been making an odd noise coming from the back of the car. I have done some research online and found there is a big issue with rear axels failing on the new 308.

My car is a 2014 plate. My question is, if this is a known fault will Peugeot correct this as it won't be under manufacture warranty?

Thanks,

Will be solved free of charge, don't worry. My was solved last year, some expanding foam seems to be good solution. Peugeot tried to solve the problem by changing axle but with no result ....

I've been noticing this odd noise coming from the rear of the car lately, generally while moving off/driving at very low speeds (probably due to having my windows open more, thanks to my A/C not working).

I'm assuming it's related to the rear axle that seems to be a common issue on the 308's.

Mine is also a 14 plate and so am also wondering if Peugeot will directly sort this for me, given that the car is well out of Peugeot's warranty?
Or would it be worth seeing if I can get it sorted with my extended RAC warranty that I got with the car?

There's a TSB for the rear axle that details the issue - I have a 15 plate and had my rear axle repaired last year - admittedly under warranty but if it's a known fault then it should be covered regardless of warranty expiry. I had to leave the car with them for the day as they inject a gel into the axle that then needs 4 hours to set before the car can then be driven. Since the work, I've had no further metal on metal / sounds like driving over a manhole cover when cornering sound. If you search the forum there's a number of threads that discuss this. I would definitely contact your local dealer and mention the TSB angle - as soon as I mentioned metal sound and TSB they knew straight away what the issue was. Good luck, let me know how you get on

More like as soon as you mentioned TSB they KNEW that YOU knew what was wrong so no point in bullshitting you that they had never seen it before like they tend to try !!

1 thing i would like to point out to everyone is that the noise is caused by the parts of the axle moving around and hitting/rubbing these parts are loose or it would not be making a noise so although the foam/gel/glue fixes the noise is it REALLY fixing the problem ?

I've certainly experienced the dealer bullshit syndrome on more than one occasion.

I would love to be able to take a back axle apart to see exactly what is happening inside. There is clearly some movement, metal to metal, and filling with foam/gel can only ever just mask the problem.

my one 2014 308 and the noise had started since passed 10,000 kilometer and it was getting worse and worse. Specially when I looking for parking spot in the shopping centre, every time car waving, the noise made people watch my car. And every time I get in and out the car, the sound made me feel like I am driving shitty car. My dealer tried to fix it with changing rubber foams on the axle but nothing changed. Finally, they ordered new designed axle from France and I got it changed on last year. Since then, the noise just disappeared. without changing a NEW designed axle, the noise won't go anywhere and it will get worse and worse. But it is not a safety issue as I mentioned above, if your 308 is out of warranty, they will charge for it.

By the sounds of it then it'd be worth giving my local Peugeot garage a call and see what they say.

It doesn't seem like it makes any difference to the car itself but no car should be making those kinda noises, so would like to get it sorted.

Cheers :)

At 27k miles mine hasn't shown the problem, but I did hear that metallic creaking noise when I jacked one side of the car up with the handbrake on.

Mine was in at Peugeot today. They sorted the repair free of charge and the car no longer makes the noise!

Nice to hear :)

Would you mind sharing what you said to them to get them to do it?

I've yet to deal with any actual Peugeot dealer/garage so not sure how good they are going to be around here.

I got to witness this issue myself today on a c4 picasso 66 reg and i now see what the issue is and it is a strange issue.

I thought it was weak welds but this is not the case the actual axle tube is flexing and making the noise !
When you jack up 1 wheel you can see the axle flex and hear the creak and once you drop it it creaks again but the strange thing is once its dropped you touch the tube and it creaks some more !

Now thing is i can see why filling this with resin foam whatever will stop the noise but the amount of flex in the cross beam is not going away and i believe over time this will get worse causing stress cracks in the metal.

Newbie to the forum

But got a quick question - my 308 is showing the same symptoms as described here - 2015 plate, but I only got it a few weeks ago. When I've looked through the forums, there is a lot of mentions of the SW being affected, but is it also showing in the hatchback models as well?

Isn't the cross beam designed to flex giving a form of independent suspension rather than a rigid rear axle?
Yes indeed the axle is designed to flex but the flexing is causing the noise due to the amount of flexing it does if you actually see how much movement it can have you will see why its noisy it does not need to be so flexible i think thats the issue :)

I suppose it's a compromise between good indipendent suspension or more solid rear axle.

It is an excercise in cost saving, the proper trailing arm independent suspension with anti roll bars etc must be more expensive to produce.

Cheers - thanks for the response.
