The only difference I found was that RD3's needed the 4 digit code as they weren't coded to the car so when you disconnected the radio and tried to re-connect you would have to enter a 4 digit code to make it operational, whereas the newer RD4's were coded to the cars identity so you could disconnect it then re-connect without having to code it, only when you try to put an RD4 in another vehicle will it require a code.
