Hi,

Hope someone can help here.

My partner's Pug 207 petrol 8v 1.4 2008 reg, which has 65k on the clock and a thorough service history, has the following symptoms:

The car will start (even from cold) and will idle happily. If you press the accelerator normally it will cut out instantly. If you press the accelerator very, very, VERY slowly then it continues to run but you do notice a slight harshness as the revs slowly build (almost like a partial misfire). The car had been running quite happily until this, in fact we'd driven it to Paris & back only a couple of weeks ago. The last time it had been serviced was 15 months ago but it had accumulated only 6k miles so was under the impression that it was OK and when inspecting oil and coolant these appear adequate.

The car first cut out when it was sitting at a traffic light, apparently idling without problem (it had already been driven a few times that day & had probably done maybe 10 miles until it cut out), when the lights changed the clutch was engaged and the accelerator bit it literally just puffed a few times, moved about a metre and then cut out. It had a nearly full tank of petrol (and no, no diesel had not got in it!) the temp gauge said it was at a reasonable temperature and there was no warning lights (such as ABS) being shown beforehand.

The above happened a week ago & since then it has been sitting in a garage in Southwest London puzzling the greatest minds of the automotive world! The garage has checked that:
1. adequate fuel is going through the system and it doesn't seem to contain any contaminants or air bubbles,
2. they changed the crank sensor,
3. they've checked the timing which apparently is ok
4. the ignition including all spark plugs are seemingly ok,
5. there are no diags coming back so nothing is being reported as failing or as a concern.

They think the next port of call will be an ecu!

All the above has been performed and nothing seems to have changed so am wondering if any one has experienced something similar or has a clue to what is wrong with it?

Tell the garage to check the engine wiring loom is not rotten inside the insulation also have a good look at the plugs where they go into the ecu and the ecu pins for rotted connections.

Also check the wiring going into the injectors from the main loom these can break internally

not sure if your engine has a map or tmap sensor but thats what i would change or clean first.

on the fords you can just unplug it and let the car run in limp home mode, which just reduces the power a little, will put the engine check light on but you can reset that after its ruled out. would guess peugeot use the same kind of setup.

Just a quick thanks to all who have replied to my original request for help. I've sent the garage who are looking after the pug a link to this discussion so let's hope that thanks to your help we can get some progress with this car.

remember in the old days when you had to feather the choke to get the right fuel/air mix, almost sounds like your problem.
could be a problem with the fly by wire system, i would run it with the airbox out, make sure it opens and closes on the throttle.
