Hi everyone,

I'm really going crazy now.
Having a problem with power steering, but only when turning to the left and only when driving. When car parked and engine on it works just fine. I am now away on the ship and asked my mate to top up the fluid as it leaked out, because it's foaming.

I had the same problem about a year ago, looked at the forum and people advised to top up over the maximum level and that would fix the problem. It did at the time, but now the problem is back and cannot get rid of it. Couple of years ago I also had the steering rack replaced as the seals had gone and I don't want it to happen again as it was costly!

I'm a marine engineer and I know a lot about mechanics and stuff... Is there some sort of a pressure relief valve that doesn't work/gets sticky, a blocked line, a filter within the pump unit?

The car gets dropped off to a garage on Thursday (separate issue) and I want to ask the guy to take a look at it, but wanted to know if anybody here can help beforehand.

Any idea please?

After 1,5 months of ownership of 407 I think, that I got this issue sorted out without new pump and high pressure hoses. Just for the background I´m working in the Volvo dealership and we have very close relationship with Peugeot main dealer as they are taking care all of our paint jobs as subcontractors. This also resulted a nice 407 with bargain price for me :). My problem was mainly steering judder and seems like there had been a leak from reservoir cap as pump unit was covered with oily goo. After some testing I found out that power steering liquid is full of bubbles and bubbles = air. Air in steering system = judder + „boiling“ fluid. Sounds simple but how to cure it? Now the smart guys from Peugeot come in. They have seen it many times and they also have a nice and easy fix for that. You need to remove pump unit from your car and open it up from reservoir side (there are 4 allen head bolts, do not touch the torx bolts!) After getting the reservoir off you can see, that there are not much space for oil and this makes the system especially vulnerable. You also can see, that return pipe hole in reservoir body has only 2,5-3mm hole (!). So you can imagine now what happens when returning oil is pressed trough this tiny hole. To make matters worse the return hole is very close to upper oil level. Basically Peugeot engineers invented foaming machine. And this is the reason why they are recommending to add oil +30mm from MAX mark. But I can assure you, that this just a workaround and not a fix as oil still gets aerated, not so badly but still. But back to fix. Get your hands on ¼ inch plastic fuel pipe. You only need some 20-25 cm. With 6mm drill bit drill over the small return hole in reservoir body. Clean everything carefully as there are no filter in the system! Now prepare the fuel hose end. You do not want that this hose escapes to the reservoir. Find a steel ball (from ball bearing), heat it little bit and press the plastic fuel hose to on it. This creates nice flange on the hose end and this flange is acting like a stop for it. Now install the pipe to reservoir. Just insert untreated end to return hole from outside and pull it through. It can be little hard as you drilled 6mm hole and hose diameter is some 6,35mm but little action with drill bit or file should do the work. Again remember that we do not want that hose “escapes” and cleanliness is a must. When the pipe is in place route it so, that end of pipe stays in lowest point of fluid reservoir. If needed then cut the pipe to right length. Install the fluid reservoir back to pump unit. Fit everything back and fill the system with new fluid (Total DA only!). Then try to bleed the system. This point can be a bugger, it took me 4 days to get it air free and I had to add little oil every day (no leaks). But now it seems to be just fine. So what we just did? We moved return outlet from upper side of the tank to bottom of the tank. And what do you know – no air any more. I got this solution done under 10€ as dealer charged me only for new oil. Hope this helps someone.

BTW I had a look on my friends 508 and it has similar pump unit as 407 but return hose goes directly to bottom of the reservoir. Seems that they have learned something.

This is not confirmed fix and you can have specific issue with yours (some mentioned, repair of the pump needed, or steering rack or just replacing the hose)

Thanks a lot. I am definitely going to try that, it does make sense. I can imagine this tiny hole on the system return is clogging up (due to no filter) within time and makes it worse.

Not sure if its going to clog but i think that this is the cheapest possible fix (if we dont break anything in the process) other than making sure all clamps on the hoses are tight and no visible damage/leaks

Not sure if its going to clog but i think that this is the cheapest possible fix (if we dont break anything in the process) other than making sure all clamps on the hoses are tight and no visible damage/leaks
One thing I am not sure of though, this plastic pipe...
If you drill a 6mm hole and stick a plastic tube/pipe of 6 mm outside diameter, the inside diameter will be still about 3mm due to the thickness of the pipe walls. Isn't the whole idea to make this return hole larger than it is originally?

Well as I understood its more about changing the position of the outlet to the bottom of the reservoir, because as it is now it is to close to the upper oil level (and it mixes the air with fluid much more than it would if it exit hose was submerged)

Yes I agree, but I also think that the size of the hole will determine the speed of the fluid passing through it (basic fluid dynamics), the larger the hole, the lesser the velocity. I will just order 2 different sizes and see how it goes.

Find and press the "Manage Attachments" button when replying to a post. Then In the window that pops up, press the "Choose File" Button. Navigate to the photo's select, click "Open". Finally, click "Upload" and it should be done.

As you can tell from the photos, the return line going back to the oil tank already has a pipe going to the bottom of it. The only hole I could see when stripped the pump is the return from what I believe is a pressure relief valve (a small ball with a spring). It looks about 3mm though... Didn't drill it anyway, cleaned everything, topped up with fresh fluid and seems a lot better than it was. Probably still some air in the system as steering not quite smooth yet, however not foaming the way it was before. The pump itself is very simple, not much to it, casing, o-rings... Very easy to assemble, just need to be carefull not to loose anything. Hope this helps.

Hope these photos helps.
I wasn't quite sure about the modification as the return line already goes from the hose connected to the reservoir there is a plastic tube going right to the bottom of the reservoir. There is however a 3mm hole, but this is a hole from a pressure relief valve.

I have stripped the pump to pieces, cleaned it, greased all seals and seems ok so far.

Got the same problem.

I got the same problem. My power steering pump has been acting up for a while now. The weird thing is that the power steering only disappear turning left while driving. Turning right is no problem.

The garage told me that one of the pipes/hoses were vibrating, and therefor made air bubbles in the fluid which caused the fluid to expand and leak out through the cap. So I need regulary to put in more fluid. Got someone to tighten the hoses, and that worked for a while, but now it's insane. I have to put more fluid in every other day. (Maybe this is due to the fact that it has become very cold?).

I have no clue about mechanics, so picking it apart and drilling it is out of the question. There's a few second hand units around. I have a 2005 407SW 136 hk. Is my pump electrical or mechanical?
