Hi all

Following the power steering failing on my car (leak on rack and pump failing due to constantly running dry), I got my local mechanic to change the rack and pump for recon units, at a depressing price of just over £900.

All was fine for about 6 weeks until last week, when it 'went' again on the motorway and the steering suddenly became very stiff. The car seems fine at 'start up' and it is only after it is run for some time that the power steering goes all heavy and lumpy/'ratchety' again. After the car has been 'off' for a while, the steering feels fine again. This has happened 4 or 5 times over the last two weeks.

Had it at the mechanic, who sent it to an autoelectrician. The autoelectrician says that his gear cannot connect to the car, and suggests that either two ECUs have failed (which will be expensive) or there is a wiring issue/fault (which will be expensive to trace also). Either way, it seems expensive! The mechanic kindly suggested I think about tradeing it in...not keen on this option given the money I have just spent on it and apart from that is has had no issues over the three years I have had it.

So...does this make sense to anyone? Bit beyond me sadly.

Is it worth getting it checked at a Pug dealer to find out for sure and, if so, are these parts easy to replace yourself (if buying the replacement from ebay etc.).

Thanks for any help you folks can give!

I was loosing fluid as well....the leak was "inside" the steering rack...both sides brimming full of fluid!
Got one off a car breakers for £180, seems to have fixed the problem, but worried about reading the above post on possible damage to the pump!

Seriously thinking of getting rid of her....going Japanese!!! lol

Ye could be right there Chopper!! lol

I do love this big 407 SW, there"s not an estate to match it for looks, but the quality of some of the parts is disgraceful, I"m servicing it on time, with the right stuff, and still it"s like "what"s next" ??? !!!!

I wouldn't put all the problems down to Peugeot though.... majority of the parts are sourced from outside anyhow, all they are doing is bolting it all together.

Before you switch to Jap though.... look at the spec/price of your 407, and then price up the same spec Jap car..... bit of difference I think :thumb:
