Power steering faulty. This is the message i got today when i tried to drive my 2011 peugeot 207,also i have a heavy steering wheel,so the car is undriveable.i had a quick look on these forums about the problems it was showing up and it does not look good.Surely a car that has done only 26,000 miles should not be getting these major problems. Can anyone give me any advice about this problem. Thanks Andrew Reid.

have you got an ABS light on and is the speedometer working? The power steering on this car is electrically operated and receives commands from the ABS computer. When this throws a wobbly (common) it affects power steering and speedo (and ABS system).

Hi,no there in no ABS message and yes the speedometer is working.I took it to my local garage today and he says it looks like i need a new power steering rack.

My wife's 207 had the ABS problem at 26k miles and it's a common fault which affects the electric steering. Before I had the rack replaced I would have the motor and torque sensor checked otherwise you might find that after a new rack is fitted the problem hasn't gone away. The motor is part of the rack and evidently can't be replaced separately.

Just so that you aware. The power steering is speed sensitive so that you get more assistance at low speeds (when parking for instance). The vehicle speed is measured using the signals from the ABS wheel sensors and this in turn controls the response of the steering motor although since the speedometer is still working it implies that the ABS unit is OK . I would check any connectors on the power steering motor just in case it's a connector fault.

Does that include fitting etc? There are a few new motors on ebay for a lot less than that. When my wife's ABS unit failed (£600) at 26k miles and 4 years old I approached Peugeot but since I hadn't bought it from a Peugeot dealer they refused to make a contribution.

I have same problem with 207 2011 Power Steering Rack which needs replacing, which appears to be a common problem. Did you contact Peugeot HQ and if so who did you speak to?

Hi,sorry with the late reply.I first contacted peugeot customer service with my problem, they said take it to a local peugeot dealer first to get a diagnosis first on the car. Then when the local dealer told me what was wrong and how much it was going to cost me for the repair,i told them i was not happy that a car with so little mileage, and something so seriously wrong,a major fault with the motor car,so they told me me to contact peugeot customer direct and complain. And when i did peugeot came back and said they would fix it for free.Good luck..

same problem

Hi, first post on here
The very same problem happened to my wifes 207 yesterday whilst she was driving back from work. we have had the car just over a year and the milage is 28k (2011) she was driving on a straight road when the power steering warning came on the display panel and the steering wheel went stiff. it's the newest car we have ever owned and it only had a full service 10 days ago so you can imagine my dissapointment. we had the vehicle recovered back to home as all of the garages were closed as its the weekend. i plan to take it to our local peugeot garage (where we purchased it) first thing in the morning to get it looked at, do you think i should mention to them that it's a common fault or wait til they diagnose it ? it is out of warranty with the dealership now but reading the post i'm hopeful that we may get peugeot to put it right F.O.C

Cheers

Yes I did get a good result our repair was dealt with by a non Peugeot garage. I spoke to the local Peugeot dealership who were non committal so I continued with repair at non Peugeot garage as this is where car had been recovered. After repair I emailed Peugeot Customer Service nationally who were very helpful and ultimately paid for the steering rack, if I'd used a dealer probably would have got cost of repair as well. So best to take to Peugeot dealer but if they are unhelpful be prepared to contact Peugeot nationally even if it means leaving car at garage for extra time whilst issue is sorted. Good luck

Same thing has just happened to my 207. Had a mechanic friend look at it and he thinks it's the power steering motor - probably a specialist job. Again, mine is a 2011 model so sounds very similar. Does anyone have the email for the customer care people at Peugeot - the only ones I can find are the ones who want to sell you a new car.

I've written to Peugeot before about a problem (water in wiring loom on 2011 model) and used the contact details from this page to contact their "Customer Relations" department. If you email they'll give you what they call a "case number". I've also written to them by post. They seem to reply in about a week if you post a letter and very slightly quicker if you email. I wish you luck. The outcome of my own complaint was successful.

Looks like the 2011 model has a power steering gremlin for sure!

My wife's low mileage 2011 model packed in today... i feared the worst and enquired at the local Pug dealership for a quote for a new steering rack (after Googling).. To be fair they said it's probably the motor/controller and not the rack assembly to which Peugeot would cover the costs - but they would need to perform diagnostics to confirm - costing £68+VAT!

It's booked in tomorrow !

So i took the car in to the Peugeot dealership having previously used Diagbox to discover a fault code of C1414 (electric power steering motor)..... the young lady at the service desk confirmed that this code is covered/fixed by Peugeot with no cost to myself ! Happy days! :thumb:

Same thing happened to my Peugoet 207, again 2011 model, when I was driving home, by myself, late the other night!
Warning light flashed on and all of a sudden the wheel wouldn't turn. Luckily it happened just as I was pulling in to park at home.

I've booked it in to Peugeot for diagnostics, at a cost of £98.40(!) tomorrow so will see what happens.......
