Hi,
Great forum, have been reading up for a few weeks..

but now i have my car booked in to get the timing belt changed and was hoping mechanic would get the car on pp2000 to help me sort out my low MPG as well.. currently getting about 36-37 mpg on the motorway at 70mph, i got this figure by filling up the tank, reset the trip odometer etc,....

i do have a p1351 fault but mechanic tells me this is common on HDI's and he doesn't change glowplugs as they are not really used, this does not seem right to me, i am not suggesting that the glow plug fault and low mpg are connected... but i just have not come across this kinda ingnore the glowplug fault attitude....Any advise would be appreciated....
oh the car is 2004 1.6 hdi estate

Don't listen to your mechanic... get the glowplugs fixed. Being the 1.6, they are critical to the regen process... no glowplugs, and you will end up with DPF problems. They are less important on the 2.0, but I believe more critical on the 1.6.

Glow plug replacement if they have failed is a must if you have dpf. You dont say what power your engine is ie 90bhp or 110bhp. The 90bhp wont have a dpf and i wouldnt be bothered replacing glowplugs on this if they have failed.
Also get a new mechanic if your car has a dpf as he doesn't understand how the system works.

btw its a 110...
mechanic, who according to him worked at a main dealer for 7 yrs claims the fault comes up as a software error on most HDI's... ??
now not sure if i should even let this guy touch my car...
i have booked a day off work tomorrow as well... so really wanted the timing belt done etc..
he also said.. if there was a regen problem i would have dpf problems..
which i believe i may have - causing my low mpg??
any more thoughts...

thanks for the replies guys, i value your opinions!

perhaps you could help me find the threads /guides on changing glow plugs.. im sure i've come accross them but cannot seem to find now (last hour spent searching)... :nono:

I don't think there are any guides as such. Plug changing is a bit of a basic thing that I'd guess most forummers know already. Plus they're in different locations depending on your engine!

Grab yourself a Haynes manual, they're only a fiver on EBay and it will give you complete instructions on plug changing.

Unless I'm mistaken, glow plugs are basically a resistance heater which can be checked very easily with a simple multi-meter.

Even if PP2000 says theres a glow plug fault you can test the plugs.
