All you had to do is plug the rubber pipe. No need to remove half the car!

You don't need a blanking plate. Just plug the rubber hose in the pic.

would i be right in thinking that blanking off the egr would result in using less fuel as the engine would be running more efficiently because of cleaner fuel?

What effect does this have on emissions?

Yes that's how it works, it raises the emissions slightly but that's only relevent in Europe I believe.

cheers, if it only means blanking off the vacuum pipe may be worth trying as an experiment to see if the car runs better as its done 88K and i'm wary about using any sort of egr cleaner and on the 2.0hdi90 the egr is on the back of the engine.
