Hi all

Hope this helps

I purchased a used Peugoet 407SW Diesel Estate (55 Plate) with what seems to be a real issue on this model where the rear wiper will not work for what ever reason.
I thought it might be useful to log the steps I take to render the problem.

My first port of call was to check the rear fuse box which is located inside the left hand storage area of the boot compartment.
The fuse had blown and replaced which enabled the washer to work on the rear, the arm still would not operate so in my haste I located a used motor unit (picture A)


This was quite cheap at £15 via an online breaker.

If I had some foresight I would have checked the original motor which is a dud anyway but might not have been to do this you need to remove the interior rear door trims to expose the motor and locking mechs.
As per (picture B) this involves removing the plastic retainers and the pull handle screw to remove them.

one tip is once you have access place a screw driver across the micro switch to enable the motor to turn with the window open(this also helps when removing trim as you can have window and door open at the same time) (picture C)

turn the rear wiper action to on the control stalk and identify if the motor activates, (mine turned fine and it will show you how the positioning of the arm can be quite important, this is because the spring loaded pin as per (picture D)

and it will locate itself in the retaining hole on the motor as it turns as per (picture E).

I am now at the stage that all is fine on the motor side and my efforts move to the window side of the wiper, I have removed the plastic cover that is located on the inside of the window which allows me access to the back of the arm mechanism and the spring loaded pin as per (picture D).

I have now got to trying to free the spindle. it is solid and totally seized.
This is continued on my reply to the post so that I was able to add more than 5 images

Rear Window Wiper Fixed Next images

Next I concentrated on the Spindle Assembly.
I removed the Plastic cover in the next picture with a screwdriver to remove the nut below.
Note: when replacing this cap I packed it with plenty of grease to stop water ingress


from the inside i unplugged the wiring and removed the inside nut to release the spindle unit.

I then placed the unit into a vice. removed the top circlip and washer from above the thread.
The next step was to apply some heat to the spindle but trying to avoid direct heat onto the thread as it seems to be a different alloy.
Then I took a persuader(nylon Mallet) and hit a few good blows to drive the rusted spindle out. the result was the next picture.

As you can see there is a type of bearing that will eventually rotate and free up on the shaft enabling cleaning of the spindle. this was then greased and replaced into the housing which I packed with grease also

This was then reattached to the car and trims replaced. Perfect Washer works perfectly now

A detailed and pretty comprehensive guide to sorting the problem. It took me quite a while to "persuade" the seized shaft from the housing, and then to clean out the crud and corrosion, but it went back together with plenty of grease and now moves much more freely. I am not sure that it has done the full 180º sweep in the last four years!:)

This is an awesome explanation and has cleared so much my problem. I got to fit the motor and check if it is working. Everything is working good until it comes to the Spindle Assembly.
It is completely stuck and i am a bit confused with the explanation. When you refer to the inside, you refer to the inside of the car or the inside below the plastic cap?
1. From the inside of the car i can not see any nut to remove.
2. From the outside, i can see there is a nut like 1inch big (somewhere in between the circlip-washer-oring from the digram metioned in colors but i dont see that nut there), is that the one you refer to when you say :"from the inside i unplugged the wiring and removed the inside nut to release the spindle unit." ??
3. Where and how should i apply the pressure to get the shaft untuck? I am afraid i will break the glass
