Hi

I have done my best looking through your excellent forums for a fault that matches mine, but no luck :-(
My van is a a June 2000 Peugeot Expert 1.9D non turbo regularly serviced and has done 206,000 miles. Owned since new.
6 weeks ago the van developed a popping noise on tick-over and lots of white smoke from exhaust, the engine was warm at the time as I had been in a customers house for an hour.
I took it to my local garage who suggested the fuel injectors maybe worn and refered me to a specialist with no charge.
However the van has done another 500 miles since and been fine until once again on cold start up the fault returned only to clear itself after a 6 mile journey.
The condition of the oil seems perfect but the heater is not as hot as it was and I do have to top the coolant up every 1,000 miles although the garage said the radiator had a slight leak which I have been unable to spot.
I hope there's a few clues here and thanks in advance for any help.

did the garage do a sniff test with the blue fluid,with the correct tool, to see if the headgasket was still good....................:nono:

It MIGHT be a head gasket causing the leak but garage is probably right about the rad they crack at the plastic end caps eventually and tend only to leak when running.

The other thing is either the egr sticking open or a problem with 1 of the pump control valves i have seen it before the valve sticks knocking the timing out causing a racket and loss of power the racket SOUNDS like a bad injector

Many thanks for all your replies, I plan to take it for a compression test next week.

Peugeot White Smoke

Thanks I will get both tests done.
I spoke to a diesel specialist this morning and they are suggesting a sticking cylinder head valve due to the fault being there on start up and clearing after a few miles. Maybe the slight coolant leak is a red herring!
They want the van overnight so they can cold start it the next morning.
Yesterday morning on startup there was lots and lots of white smoke but perfect startup this morning. If it is a sticking cylinder head valve maybe I should wait until it sticks every morning before booking it in?
