Or at least what I suspect is Limp Mode.

What happens is that I am driving the car as normal when suddenly it goes into what I think is 3rd gear & does not leave that gear either through slowing down or speeding up. Its only when I restart the car that it goes back to normal, being able to go through all 4 gears until inevitably it happens again.

As far as the gear display on the dashboard it does not show the dash (-) that I, through previous experience, know what happens in Limp Mode. This time it remains in D or if I am driving in tiptronic mode it switches from whichever gear, 1, 2, 3, 4 to D.

Can't figure out what could be a cause. Time, distance, operating temperature, drive mode, etc I've looked at & it happens regardless.

Since it fixes itself when the car is restarted I figure it is something electric/ECU related.

Any other ideas, possible solutions?

Thanks.

It sounds like more of a gearbox problem rather than an engine problem. Does the engine still rev normally?
To me it sounds as if it is an electrical problem if it resets if you switch off the engine and restart.
I have got a similar problem with my power steering, in that it fails but if I switch off and restart it is ok often for months.
These are difficult problems to resolve until they become a permanent fault.

“In most cases the transmission will go into the downgraded mode, or limp home. In this mode the transmission is locked in third speed to enable to continue the operation of the vehicle. This is reported by some drivers as a loss of power. The downgraded mode can be preceded by some very harsh up or down shifts. After stopping and restarting the engine, the transmission will usually return to normal operation.”

Got that from another site and it describes it perfectly.

A diagnostic came up with the code P1167.

I had same problem- as "reliable406" wrote this problem

related only to the Gear Box, the mechanic fixed it in my car by changing the Oil + Pressure valves.

Probably short term fix though as the brake band linings will be about shot I would have thought. Engine size is part of the info we like so that we have a full story of what we are dealing with.
