Hi all,
Please help if you can. Long and painful and expensive story, but ultimately need to get my ecu out of my car, 207 cc, petrol, 1600, year 2007, to send for testing/repair.
Can someone tell me
what it looks like,
where it is
and how to take it out?
I'm a woman with no mechanical experience...........

Many thanks.

Thanks very much Ian. It seems to be in plastic casing. Can you advise whether it is easy to get out? I can see a couple of plugs going in at the front, do I just unplug everything or do I need a mechanic to get it out?
Peugeot and a local garage can't find out what is wrong (engine management light on and anti pollution fault, sometimes revving on its own at idle, once hot and in low gear, sometimes just cuts out, like someone has taken key out, but starts again no trouble but then cuts out again, but hasn't done this for a couple of months.) Initially failed emissions on MOT, various things and sensors replaced but not helped, having researched forums etc I think it is possibly
a faulty ecu. Have found firm that tests and repairs if they are faulty, but don't really know whether I'm throwing more good money after bad, already cost £1500 just to get through MOT!! EML back on 2 miles down the road and anti pollution warning up again.)

As an aside, you asked earlier for VIN but car at garage then. I have just looked up the VIN on the Peugeot VIN checker, which says car dates from 2003 (not 2007 as it should be) it also said that approx mileage was 260,000km. !! Should I be worried by this as only 58,000 miles on clock?!

Thanks for any advice you can offer......

Before you start taking the ECU out, be aware that blaming the ECU is often what mechanics do when they can't think of anything else, and it is rarely the problem. The symptoms you describe sound like a bad crank/cam position sensor (depending on engine). They are cheap and worth a try before racking up another big bill.

The business with the VIN sounds very odd. I suggest you use the following web pages to find out more:

https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

The latter should give some mileage history.

If you post the last eight digits of your VIN (it will be on your V5 - the "logbook"), that will give a check that the recorded VIN is the same as on the car, and I can look up when your car was made and when the warranty commenced, as a check on the peugeot VIN checker.

EDIT: I just used https://www.vindecoderz.com/EN/Peugeot to check two Peugeots I am quite sure of, and in both cases the years were wrong, in one case the country of build was wrong and in both cases the mileage was clearly a guess based on age and vastly too much, so don't worry.

Thanks again Ian, I will try that sensor. Have looked up on those two websites, seems ok, but brake pads failed mot at only 13,000 miles on first MOT which seems unlikely to me? Last numbers of VIN are 33771992.

Thanks again for your time.

Hi Ian, just seen your edit, thanks for that, I will only now worry about how much more the car will cost me!!

The engine is 1598cc petrol, model 207 GT cc. Can you let me know the name of the sensor I should replace on this info? I know there are no guarantees, but it seems it is worth a try if its cheapish.

Thanks again.

You are wasting time looking for problems the VIN IS correct the online vin checkers do not work with peugeot vins properly never have its to do with the check digit being wrong as peugeot do not use it.

13K miles out a set of pads does not sound unlikely first mot would be 3 years old so they were probably low and scabby !!!

As ian says its unlikely your ecu wiring is far more likely to be your real issue

Your car was built on 8 November 2004, but the warranty did not start until 29 June 2007, so the car was unsold for over 2 years years and 7 months. Quite a surprise! Both these facts are straight out of the official Peugeot Service Box.

EDIT: Not sure about the name of the sensor, but it will be either camshaft position sensor or crankshaft position sensor. Reliable mentioned wiring - good point - especially connections to earth - they can play havoc, so check for clean bright metal-to-metal contact.

As Ian says, the ecu is seldom the problem. You need to get it diagnosed by someone using Diagbox [peugeot specific software].
Where are you based?

OK, the EP6 is a twin cam engine, so it has two Camshaft Position Sensors - they are item 5 - check the wiring as well as the sensors:

Thank you all for taking the time to try and help, it is much appreciated. Since I have already taken it to Peugeot, and a local garage, without success for this particular problem, maybe the next thing would be to get an auto electrician to check wiring/earths and the two sensors for possible malfunction?
It is a lovely car which I don't want to scrap, but am rapidly running out of money!! But I also want to get to the bottom of the problem, since I have invested so much time and energy looking for an answer!! I think I know more about what can go wrong with these cars now than I ever thought I wanted to know........!
Next time I'm looking for transport I'll stick to something simple and uncomplicated. Like a donkey
If I do manage to get it fixed, I'll post back.

Ian...I'm coming to Jersey with the car in September...so if you see me broken down at the side of the road, you'll probably want to drive on by.......!

Thanks again.

Bring it round to my place, and we'll put Peugeot Planet (or should it be Diagbox for the 207?) on it, see what we can find out.
