How much fuel was in the tank and how much did you put in ?
And did you stop it or did it stop by itself?

1/4 tank and i topped up another 20 litres
the car started fine but i stopped after 200 yards
when i realised what i'd done? car seemed to be running fine

You can really only dilute 4-5 litres of petrol with diesel , looks like you`ve screwed that one ,
only leaves draining the tank sorry ,
the only good thing about that is who ever is doing that can also reach in and clean out any crap that was in the bottom of your tank previously.
(through the back seat)

thanks for all your advice . put car into garage today and had tank drained
out. mechanic says he was pleased with job and is pretty sure there has been no damage done as the car was only driven about 200yds. also flushed out fuel lines and says he has also put in some sort of additive to assist diesel help re lubricate system. he has ran the car for me and says there is no hint or loss of power and all seems to be running sweet. no smoking whatsoever from exhaust and he has asked me to simply go easy over the next couple of refills to make sure system is purged. looks like i've been lucky?

cost for drain ,clean fuel lines , additive, refill fuel tank labour £330
