You can use a self tapper clip, saves all the faff of getting the old clip out, and a new retaining clip may lose grip after time too I guess. Just screw it over the rod from the end to the right position to pull the lock mechanism, then push it back in the existing retaining clip at the right place, it will hold at that place.
