I have P0409 fault on my 407 1.6hdi which I think relates to the EGR valve.
I am also getting a depollution fault, presumabley due to a problem with the valve.

The valve itself was replaced about a year ago, I have given it a clean with some Winns EGR cleaner but this hasn't solved the problem.

Is it likely to need replacing or can I remove it and give it a good clean?
Is there anything else I can try?

Cleaning it wont help as the fault you have is to do with the signal being sent back to the ecu being wrong the fault is with the electrical side of the valve could be jammed could be wiring but it is sending the wrong signal back.

Check the wiring and check the electrical section is moving freely you can pop the cover off depending on type to see the cam assembly sometimes it breaks in there.

The valve has a black plate on top with 4 screws on it, is that the bit to remove to see the assembly?

How do I go about testing the wiring? Am I looking at using a voltmeter to make sure that each wire/pin has a voltage going to it?
