try a filter wrench first but if it's stuck solid what i've done in the past is put a screwdriver through the filter and it works everytime

Socket should fit but you may have to remove a couple of items to get it on. If I remember rightly I think the metal shroud around the filter is one of them. I may be wrong as it depends on the exact lay out of your engine components. Some are easy to get to and some are a little more difficult.

i have the 2.0hdi engine and worked on 2 others apart from mine. Remove top cover, then put your socket on a 12" extension bar attached to your 1/2" drive ratchet, the filter housing is angled in such a way that you dont need a wobble bar or other tools.
If you use a filter wrench you could crack the plastic housing. They are designed to be taken off with a socket.
