Wondering if anyone has any ideas on a crank no start 207 Vti 1.4 2009. Was running fine one day but after the battery was disconnected then no start. What's been done:

Diagbox shows only C990 which is the relay for the fog lamp
Live data shows cranking at 180rpm
Battery is fairly old but holds a charge reading 12.6v
All fuses are good
Several attempts at a BSI reset
Keys are recognised
ECU & engine fuse box are clean & free of any water damage

Can hear the fuel pump priming with ignition on
Sprayed easy start into air intake
Have good consistent spark on all 4 coils (only tested from coils as i can't get the plugs out at the moment)
Air flow is not restricted by anything obvious
Compression sounds good with cranking but haven't tested with a gauge

5V reference seems good on the sensors i can access. However on the ECT I have 3.3v not 5v. This is with it unplugged & measured from battery -ve. However the coolant temp does read accurate at 12c. Have tried unplugging the ECT but still no start.


The car had an engine swap over a year ago & it did this once before shortly after that, same sudden no start. I sent the ECU off then for repair but it came back with no faults found. However after i put it back in the car it mysteriously started straight away & has been running fine all this time, until now.

Im thinking either an internal intermittent fault with the ECU or BSI, an ignition timing problem or bad wiring somewhere, no codes however. Seems odd though that it's happened again now right after i disconnected the battery. I haven't tested the power & grounds to the ECU as i don't have the wiring diagram for it.

Not easily its in a bit of an awkward place. What are you thinking, would it confirm or eliminate something ? Cheers

Have you checked that the camshaft is turning when cranking? Maybe cambelt failure?

No idea if this will work and you are not ment to do it, but turn ignition on then off and quickly remove a battery lead. I found on the daughters car this kind of reset the ecu and car would hunt for a short time.
Just hope it doesnt cause more problems but i have done it many times, put battery terminal back on fast and dont let it spark and crackle.

Well I got nothing to loose now. You've done this on no start modern Peugeot's right?

as said it is not recomended but i have done it so many times with no problems on the vti, but did have another idea which i have used on other cars and that is to pull the plugs on the cam sensors to force it into limp home mode.
Still thinking a ecu reset should be the first step.

Yep. I had the same problem on my 308. Tough to start with the key. No pattern to it.

But would bump start first time every time.

Nothing showing up on Planet. Battery and all electrics, fuel pump fine

Replaced starter, even though it sounded fine - 100% success after that.

Thanks for the help, definitely some things to consider. My spark plug socket will arrive soon so i can properly check the plugs to see if they are getting wet. i might try unplugging the MAP too, does anyone know exactly how to get to it ? Thanks

you need to remove the air filter box, just a couple of screws you can see inside then it all just pulls apart, sensor is on the inlet manifold passenger side (just under the vvt lift motor)

I was just thinking theres always been a fairly strong fuel smell when its first started/cranked, I wonder if this has something to do with it? This needs attention anyhow but perhaps one of the injectors is leaky or something.

Try starting holding throttle pedal down incase it flooded

Cheers yeah i've tried clear flood mode but no good.

When i can get the plugs out & see the condition of them then that should shed some light. I can't see me loosing compression over night & it does still sound good when cranking, so if the plugs look good then i must have missed something.

If the timing chain has skipped wouldn't it still try to fire albeit with some kind of backfire ? maybe i don't understand this bit properly though?

Will be able to go through everything again in the week so hopefully will get a better idea of whats going on.

If chain has skipped more than a couple of teeth then it would not even try to fire as the valves would be opening at wrong times leading to loss of compression but to be honest any more than 1 tooth out is likely to bend valves anyway !

I finally got the correct tool to get the plugs out & 3 of them are covered in oil, 1 of them was clean. You can see the oil sitting in the well in the pics. incidentally I tested them out of the cylinders & they do have a good spark on them. Is there a way to determine if its just the valve cover gaskets that need replacing or something more serious ? I take it this would confirm the reason for non start? Thanks

Now that you have the plugs out, do a compression or leak down test to determine if your compression is an issue. If it is low, check your cam timing as a first port of call.

Ok so ill rule the oily plugs out then.

I can't help thinking that it would be extremely unlikely that id loose compression in all 4 cylinders over night especially as the car was running fine the day before, no?

With regard to timing - in diagbox i can see 180RPM when i crank. Does this along with no associated fault codes confirm the CPS is good ?
