I was helping a friend today with a 2.0 407 HDI with a dead power steering pump.

Start the engine, the no power steering warning lights up in the console in red. There is NO life in the pump.

He has tried another BSI and is on pump number 3!! Voltmeter testing shows 12v power ok to the 2 pin connector on the pump. Fuse #7 is ok on the main fusebox.

I put diagbox on and on a global test, there is "no communications" from the power steering ECU.

I'm thinking this must be a break in the loom?... any ideas? We spent ages at it, checking connectors and cleaning them with contact cleaner. No luck at all.

Any other changes from standard on the car before/since issue. I would check all connections to pump/ecu. There is a high current feed for motor and low current to ECU.

Also worth checking continuity on data lines from ECU to OBDC plug and between the two data lines

The car is standard. Nothing done except 217k miles!! :eek:

Regarding the power steering ECU.... where is it? We were thinking its integrated into the pump unit?

Yes should be in the pump, two connectors to pump high current two pin plug and a 9 pin plug which is ecu power and comms etc

We tested that 2 pin one and its getting 12v ok (well.. 13.4 as you'd expect with the engine running).

So, the problem must be between the BSI and the pump then? I think we'll hand it over to a local specialist to test the loom. We've tried 2 BSI's and multiple pumps, so there must be a break somewhere I guess.
