Hi,
A couple of months ago I purchased a 2003 406 hdi 90. It has been great. ( my 4th 406). Car is very clean with only 85,000 miles on the clock.

Started car today to go to work and immediately several warning texts came up on the display, one after the other in succession with beeps.
These were airbag fault, abs, fault, charging fault, brake fault etc.
Car still drove fine and lights went out.
As well as the texts on the display, the corresponding dash lights were on.
Car drives fine though.
Turning off and starting engine and sometimes the faults come up, sometimes they do not at all.

Never had a single fault before.
These last two months I changed the alternator due to bearing noise on the old one , with a refurbished one from auto parts ( identical), new front discs and pads, Cambelt , waterpump and rollers change and new auxiliary belt. Full service.
Done approximately 500+ miles since all this work done with no dash faults up until today.

Anyone have any ideas please?

Having owned 4 coupes, i know from experience, its more than likely your battery is on its way out, especially as the display says charging fault.

Pop into a good autocentre and get them to drop test the battery, to see what its like under load.

The Ecu and Bsi usually dont like a start up voltage of less than 12.0 v on the 406, even though the car will start with about 11v, any less and they chuck loads of faults up.

Problem is, the fault codes wont go away after a change to a new battery, so you will need a PP2000 to reset everything. So good idea to plug one in before you change the battery and test what voltage your alternator is pushing out just to make sure there is no issues with wiring etc.

Battery fault?

Fuddy Mucker, sounds possible ,but the battery although a good few years old is a quality one . With the car not running it can operate all the elec Windows quickly and smoothly. Starts the car even after left without starting for couple of weeks recently. Do you still think it could be the battery?.
Is it worth trying a soft reset of bsi?

Edit: Update.

This morning I took the kids to school, car started and drove fine with no faults. I started and switched off/started a few times before setting off. Return home fine.
I have put the car round the back and opened the bonnet and removed engine, battery and bsi and Ecu covers. Everything appears normal.
All earths seem nice and tight and no chaffed wires that I can see. The earth next to the battery box, going to the chassis does look a little rusty. Could this be a problem? .
I checked alternator wiring and all wiring in general and all seems good .

I have stopped and started the car several times at the back and no faults or beeps at all.

Does this rule out the dreaded bsi unit fault?. If there is a fault with bsi, would that be all the time?.

Ruddy Mucker, with no faults showing up on the dash, or text on the display - would I still need that PP2000 reset? , I have no idea what that is but guess it's done via diagnostics through the obd?

The battery is 5 years old ( receipt is sellotaped on the top), it's a quality Bosch job and seems to start the car effortlessly and have lots of power to operate everything. I hear what you say about the battery and I will have it checked out but it seems such a good one.

I have to try and sort this as cheap as. We just recently returned from a 2 week holiday abroad ( first in many years) and we are beyond skint!.

If anyone has any more ideas, please keep them coming. The help is greatly appreciated.

I will clean up that rusting earth near the battery box with wire wool and do the soft bsi reset in the meantime.

I'd go with battery too.
Peugeots of a certain vintage don't like even slightly iffy batteries.
First thing I've done with all 4 of mine has been a new battery.
Well, apart from my first 407. The starter motor killed that one :D

In fact after owning my 406 for 5 years. I sold it to my brother. About 4/5 months later he started getting odd periodic alarms. ABS, handbrake and others. I told him to change the battery.
That sorted them, and it was no more trouble until he sold it a couple of years later.

Another vote for battery here does not matter who made it they dont last forever and low voltage while cranking will cause fault displays.

Good test is see how long it takes before going into eco mode leave radio on with ignition in first position if eco mode comes on before the BSI turns off the radio then battery is tired

Battery

Thank you for all the battery suggestions. I will definitely pursue changing it and for now do the radio left on test.

I cleaned up the rusty earth and to date have had no errors. The car has been running a little hesitant and I'm fairly confident that is the Maf . I disconnected th Maf and although it doesn't run perfect , it does run a lot better. I have a new maf on its way.

One thing I forgot t mention is that the very first time I drove the car at night I had no dipped beam at all. I then used the car late a couple of weeks ago and lights were fine. Last week I had no dipped beam again.
I have side lights and high beam.

Reading around, this could be the dip resistor?

Any further ideas?
