Yesterday I changed both drop links and anti roll bar bushes.

Everything went together fine and I went for a drive but now there's a knocking noise, sounds a bit like a bottom ball joint, but when I had the wheels off I couldn't feel any excess play.

Could it be that the new drop links and bushes have put extra strain onto a worn ball joint and made its problem more pronounced?

I put an electric impact driver and tightened them up a bit more so yours could still have a bit of scope for being tighter. Also the holes in the ARB were worn and ending up replacing that as well.

The ball joints are worth doing and not too difficult

Some of the after market parts are pants, may be worth exchanging them again for a different make, on my vectra I have changed them 3 times in 3 years.
