Thought it was. I have found the numbers relate to the thickness and hence the capacity of the battery.

First 2 digits = diameter in mm, last 2 = thickness in tenths of mm, so a 2016 is 20 mm diameter and 1.6 mm thick.

As you say, easy when you know :) and knowledge is a light burden.

Forgot to include that the system extends to cylindrical LiIon batteries as well - the 18650 is 18 mm diameter and 65 mm long The 14500 is 14 mm diameter and 50 mm long (very close to an AA (14.5 × 50.5 according to Wiki))
Slight variations can happen due to terminal styles, protected 18650 cells will be ~2mm longer as a small circuit board goes on the end between the battery's terminal (hidden by the board and the plastic sleeve) and the 'externally presented' terminal.
