JZR recall campaign for the Puretech 110 / 130 finally hits the UK ( already rolling out across Europe ) - measure / check the timing belt & update the software.

Failure of the timing belt can damage the brake vacuum pump which can lead to loss of braking assistance.

UK owners can check there VIN on the link below.

Recall Campaigns - VIN (peugeot.co.uk)

My 308 has been recalled by Peugeot but it's not on the DVSA database yet.

Concerns March 2013 - April 2017 built Puretech 110 / 130 engines.

They have implemented an alarm when the pressure in the mastervac (brake amplifier) is too high.
Depending on the size distribution of the belt debris, belt debris may first clog the oil filter. In that case, the oil filter open its bypass valve without alarm. The oil pressure alarm toggle only if the oil pump strainer is clogged first.
When belt debris enter the pressured oil circuit, they will clog the vacuum pump strainer (which is very small) and kill it.
This is only for turbocharger engines which have a vacuum pump, atmospheric engines are not concerned.

Perharps they also implemented an analysis of the oil pressure depending on the engine temperature,rpm,etc.. to toggle an alarm but I'm not aware of it.

They also tighten up maintenance recommendations.

I have received this recall. It tells me that, this engine if fitted with a timing belt that operates inside the engine, lubricated by the engine oil. As an ex engineer this surprised me, as on any car I have had, the timing belt was always on the front of the engine, and quite easy to check for damage, and not a big job to change. Of course IF the belt is inside the engine, that is obviously a much bigger job requiring quite a lot of stripping down part of the engine to be able to check the parts. It will of course cost very much more. However before my car goes in for service I always check the oil level, just to see how much the engine is burning. This time I had a look around the engine, and surprise, surprise what did I see, yes the timing belt just where I would expect to see it. Am I being told, this engine has two timing belts one inside, and one outside. Or is there two different engines both with the same specification. I am now 93 years old, and so for some time now have had to rely on Car manufacturers and their specified garages to be honest in dealing with customers. May I tell you, I once bought a VW, and used the garage I bought it from to service it. I was and still am in the habit of checking the oil level when I get the car back. This time I found the oil had not been changed. The garage when doing a check found my car had not been serviced at all, another car had been done, by mistake, that was an annual service. A big row, a free service, and that garage and VW have never seen me since.
Is this letter from Peugeot another con, to give their garage people some rather expensive jobs, that some poor old soul has to fork out for.???

Mines booked in for 18th March - it was already booked in for MOT that day but there now also doing the JZR recall.

Its not mission critical as its only done 36k miles so it can wait till then.

Booked in for 8th Feb it's done 32k miles, about time Peugeot acknowledged this in the UK.
Seems this campaign is to reprogram the software to alert the driver a bit earlier of impending doom and hopefully get to the workshop in time the next step is to get to the cause of the real problem ,Gen 3/4 belt replacement without question.

My mechanic friend - his wife's Puretech 110 powered 208 has been recalled as well.
He has already had to clean debris out from the inlet VVT solenoid.

Both my 308 & his 208 have the generation 2 belts fitted.

There is also talk online of the timing belt interval being reduced down to 6 years / 62k miles as well.

Just had my car service done today and included this recall. Belt ok and software updated. 1.2 130 FEB 2017 23k. Low mileage so wasn’t expecting any problems. No change to interval change as far as I am aware (112k/ 10 years) so I would presume if I keep getting it serviced at the main dealer and it needs replacing before then Peugeot would cover the costs?

Hello how can I check the belt if its inside the engine. That’s what I have been told in the recall letter. Just a point, my car went in on Friday, for service and this recall, got told it wouldn’t be ready until Monday. Ring them Monday and low and behold they couldn’t complete the recall as they haven’t got the belt in stock if it was needed. Just told them return the car, and let me know when they have the Timing Belt Kit as they call it. Don’t quite know what is in a Timing Belt Kit, other than a belt.

Ok this is the brake booster pressure sensor.
It is installed by default only on engine having Start & Stop feature (it allows the engine to be restarted when the vacuum pressure becomes too high)
Of coures this sensor is mandatory to get the alarm (ECU update done durng the recall) when the pressure in the brake booster is too high due to vacuum pump failure.

Just had a urgent safety recall letter through my letter box.

Peugeot JZR recall.

It also states the timing belt replacement interval is now reduced to 6 YEARS or 62500 MILES whichever comes first.

Here is the letter we receive in France:

Concerning the replacement interval of the timing belt, it is written that it changes to 6years/100.000km.

Then they speak about a arduous maintenance related to the answer of 2 questions:

1) What is your annual mileage ?
a) less than 15.000km b) more than 15.000km
2) What is the length of your usual trips ?
a) more than 10km b) less than 10km

If you answer b) to this 2 questions, Peugeot recommend to switch to a arduous maintenance but they do not clearly explain what is a arduous maintenance.

Last but not least at, if you look at a service schedule of a recent car (here a 308 1.2l 130hp/2019), the arduous replacement for the timing belt is 105.000km/6years !

If you want to do something more unclear, it may be difficult :D

I got a 19 plate 308sw 1.2 puertech 130bhp last month, sorry to find this thread!

Thanks for the updates, looks like I'll need to change my timing belt in 40,000 miles (have about 23,000 miles on the clock), does anyone know the cost for this? I do quite high mileage so that's probably in about 2 years.

I switched from diesel to petrol as I do a lot of town driving and thought petrol was better suited as it doesn't have a dpf to clog up, but it seems this puretech has it's own clogging-up issues with bits coming off the belt!

What a shame, the engine is great to drive.

Your 2019 vehicle isn't affected by this recall- its meant to have an upgraded timing belt.

Continue to follow the service schedule / belt replacement interval Peugeot UK publish for your vehicle VIN unless Peugeot UK notify you of any changes.
