So I managed to score a JBL Premium Audio system from a 2002 607 for NZ $200, to go into my 406. The two large speakers are sub woofers which go on the rear parcel shelf. I also grabbed the wiring loom to connect it all up, the rear parking sensors and the module for that system. This is the system wired up on the bench, with it's faulty MFD display, lots of lines and hard to read, but otherwise works.
I used my battery charger which has a constant 12v output and wired up according to the 607 wiring diagrams
Some observations
1) The amp and CD unit have constant power and grounds, but are both turned by the headunit on the pin 5 connector (bottom row) of the headunit, a 12v output.
2) The MFD is important in the factory configuration- every time I disconnected it, things like the CD just stopped working. So a faulty one could cause the system to look faulty when it isn't. And it is needed anyway, to set the parameters of the speakers, etc.
3) The vanbus network was functioning on the bench, the Picoscope showing me that the units were all happily talking to each other outside of the car, with no BSI. Although the constant beeping was a little annoying!
4) The units are all interchangeable between 607 and 406- the CD stacker, headunit and MFD. The amp is essentially the same, wiring wise, but the 607 one has extra speaker outputs, so that is something to keep in mind.
The next step is to install in the car. Would be interesting to see, too, how this system would work with an aftermarket stereo and CD stacker? Just to bring it more up to date, I mean, the factory Clarion 406 tape deck? I'm not sure what use that really has?
The biggest issue I have, is what to do with the rear door speakers and tweeters- the 406 was never made with this in mind, so this could be a challenge. Any suggestions, please let me know!
